Accidentally Hand Fishing White Bass

One early morning at Lake Wichita in 1977, my brother and I hit a school of White Bass/ Sand Bass that pushed a school of shad to the beach area we were fishing. We had 4 dozen river minnows, There's no limit on them at this time in Texas, we caught both fish baskets plum full. I was 21 then and healthy but plum tuckered out. We had a campfire coffee pot, sitting near the area of our baskets of fish. I saw the huge White Bass on it's side near the shore. I figured it was boat hit, dying or dead. I wanted to remove it from our active fishing area, stuck my thumb in it's mouth and raised it out of the water 8lbs, nothing wrong with it. I guess he was sneaking up on minnow bits from our gutted out minnows caucuses. Have you ever accidentally hand fished or slapped a fish out of the water? Surprised me for sure.

My Uncle Dave saw some splashing in the water near his pier in Northern WI back in the 60s. It turned out to be what I remember to be an 11lb walleye with a 15” yellow perch stuck in it’s throat as it swallowed the perch head-first. The big fish was drowning in about 4” of water. Uncle Dave netted it and had those fish mounted the way he found them. Dave has passed so I will see if my Cousin kept the mount and perhaps I can get a picture of it to share…

That would be awesome to see, we didn't have fancy cellular camera phones back then just old men with fishy memories.

I remember seeing the mount on the wall better than 50 years ago. He also had a big Muskie mounted inside a glass topped coffee table.

Was deer hunting late October in Wyoming. Came to a small creek crossing. Looking for a shallow spot to cross I saw a pretty good size Brook trout just kind of sunning on this shallow rock. Just grabbed it!
Didn’t harvest a deer that day but had a nice snack over a little “ take a break” fire I decided to build. Yum😁

A few years ago before the Port of Corpus Christi bullheaded along the ship channel we would drive out to Charlie’s pasture an sit an wait for the tankers to come through. You had to time it right but when the tanker came through they would draw so much water away from the shoreline we would run out and pick up the flounder left high and dry. We could gig them, stab them with a screwdriver or what not but not allowed to net them and turn and haul ass back to the shoreline before the tankers wake would catch you. Very sporting

It was! Back then I could run and was in the 40 year old shape. If the danged bulkheads weren’t there I’d take my son and my 14 year old granddaughter and have them try it. It’s all about timing. When the water goes out, run fast and when the ship wake comes back run as fast as you can. We got a few 5 to 7 pounders. We got one 10 pounder once before thanksgiving and my mother in law stuffed it for thanksgiving dinner

I was fishing out of my 11 foot pram in Moss Landing California for starry flounder. I was 15 or 16. A juvenile shark between three and four feet swam along the surface right next to the boat. One hand around the tail and one under the belly. I did not know what to do with it, so it went back in. I know, that was just plain dumb. It didn't do the skin on my hands much good either. I am glad I have grown up and become responsible. I would put on gloves now. I have no idea what kind of shark it was. The only sharks I could identify at that time were sand sharks, leopard sharks and spiny ray sharks. I thought at the time that it was a blue shark, but now know they are prone to deep water. KIds will be kids.
