Ok, I'm 83 years old and I'm toying with the idea of selling my boat. I've supplemented my fishing experience by getting into beach fishing a couple of years ago, so its not like I want to give up fishing all together. I could still go out with my pro-guide friends occasionally. But, selling my boat, I'm afraid, would turn into a major fiasco.

Since the demise of local newspapers and want-ads, ones choices of listing a boat are very limited. Dealers aren't interested in consignment sales and the nation wide boats-for-sale sites are a joke. I sold a car recently on Facebook Market Place, and in spite of taking every and all precautions, demanding and getting cash dollars, the deal still got partially screwed up. You don't just walk up to your friendly bank teller and plunk down $15k and say deposit this to my account anymore. As it turned out, the young couple that bought my VW never filed the necessary forms required by the state, the car was suspected of being part of a robbery a few months later and guess who had to write letter after letter recounting the sale, what identification I demanded, etc. I think its all over with now and I've stopped worrying about going to prison.

I live in a boat hungry area and I have just what everybody is looking for. Is there an honest way to do this or do I have to start lurking around the Tracker Marine dealership and "psst, hey buddy, you wanna buy a boat" routine. And just ask FlyGuy, it is just as bad for the buyers.

Ol' boy, someone is going to get a mighty fine outfit. If there is anyone on the Stage that wants a super boat and is reasonably close to Brownsville, TX., snap this one up. It has been proven to catch fish.

I wish I knew what to tell you that would help you out. Is there a friend down there that might be interested in buying it? I'm just not familiar with the mentality down there. This online buying and selling is a different ball game for me. Sorry, Tony. Keep in touch. Have a good evening, Tony.

Things have changed, that's for sure Tony. A couple friends have bought and sold boats and motorcycles on Marketplace, and another sight called "Offer Up ". I'm not too familiar with it so it might be only local up here. Do any of the Tackle Shops in the area have a bulletin board for customers to buy and sell stuff? Several places up here have them. You post a picture and description, with little tear offs with your phone number on it. If anyone is interested they tear off your number and call you. Good luck, I hope you're successful.

What Fred said and let all friends and family know to spread the word. The time of year is right, spring time, tax refund time etc.
Good luck, nice looking boat !

Tony; As a suggestion, take some pictures of your rig, either in the water, or trailer, post them in tackle and bait shops around, along with a card with details of your rig, along with your asking price. Post sevral along with your phone number and name. I sold my rig within 2 weeks. I didn't worry about long distance, or anything, a local dentist bought my boat. Just Sayin...RJS

Thanks for the endorsement, Leo. She is a sweet boat and, like I say, I'm just 'toying' with the idea of selling her. Maybe I could make it one or two more years without hurting myself or someone else. I did have an older guy go overboard a couple of years ago in a pure accident when he got tangled in a rope. We were in about 18" of water but it was spring cold and that really frightened me. I'm going to have the guys at the Marina get her all spiffed up for the summer and maybe try some of these ideas everyone has mentioned. All my kids/grand kids live up there in the nether reaches and aren't boaters or die-hard fisherpersons or I'd just give it to one of them. Or I might just leave it to the kidney foundation. We'll see. But it just seems a shame that what we used to be able to do with a handshake now requires two lawyers and a suit from treasury to accomplish. Tsk, tsk.

Good mornin', Tony. It's kind of like the keys to your car, you hate to give them up but sometimes it's for the best. Have a good day, Tony.

Get a notary from your bank to make out certified BILL OF SALE. Notary gets id's from both parties and you are protected from anything buyer does after sale.

It does not matter how you post it. You can still get a bad buyer. I have sold and bought a lot on Craig's list. I have had no more problems than when I used to use the classifieds of local news paper. If dealing with a titled vehicle, just be sure to confirm the other guys driver ID matches the name of the buyer on the title notice of sale. Fill out all paperwork completely, and send in the notification of sale in a timely manner. Do no drop the sale price on the form from the actual price to save the other guy tax money. I always make a copy of the notice of sale before I send it in.

I always go to the other guys bank to do the paperwork and have the money transferred just like in a house closing if the sale is over$5,000 unless I know the buyer.

Had a similar car selling experience , got a call from an officer from another state asking me what my car was doing parked in a MacDonalds parking lot . I told him I sold the car and gave him the Yahoo's name. He then ask when I sold it and had I filled out the title . I answered yes and then he ask me if the bullet holes were in the vehicle when I sold it !

Tony,
Especially with the boat and motor backorders the dealers out west are eager to sell a boat on consignment. You might try a different dealer.

I still think Market Place is your best bet. Bought mine off Market for years ago. We have been struggling to catch fish ever since. Hoping to find someone to help us. Headed back north in a couple weeks.
