This recent post entitled Fly Guy, showing a fisherman sprawled out in an aluminum fishing boat filled with empty beer cans reminded me of another trip when I took some guests fishing.
This was back in the late 1990’s or perhaps early 2000 while I was still working and prospecting heavily for wealthy clients. I had just landed a new client who was a doctor. While she didn’t fish, she recommended that I take her husband and son fishing. So, I arranged a trip to Lake Sabine, and we met the evening before at a local motel.
Early the next morning we were up and intended on having breakfast there, but the cook did not show up, so we had to travel to another ‘greasy spoon’ café for a quick, but truly greasy eggs and ham before launching the boat and begin our day fishing.
We were reasonably successful and were catching some keeper trout and redfish. But I noticed that my guest was ill. (There was no beer on board) He was regularly throw up, upchucking over the side of the boat. Fortunately, he was thoughtful enough to always do this on the down wind side! And always after he had puked over the side, we would again begin to catch fish.
When the bite would slacken off, I would yell at him, “Bill, chum some more, so we will catch more trout!” I know it wasn’t any fun for him, and I probably should not have been so crass as to have been yelling at him to throw up over the side of the boat, but it was really working. Every time he heaved up, there would be a corresponding flurry of trout hitting our lures. I guess I am more of a fisherman than diplomat! And you probably think it was cruel!
I don’t know whether he had a virus, or it was the ‘greasy spoon’ restaurant where we ate breakfast, but there was a definite correlation to his vomiting and fish being attracted to our area and we were catching fish! I am one to take advantage of anything that works. Was that the right thing to do? What would you have done in the same situation? Just Sayin…RJS

As long as he could continue to vomit he needed to get up what was causing his problems so I think you came out even you were helping him and he helped you

Did he catch any fish, he should have been right on the "hole".
Flyguy: Actually, I think he was too sick to care, but I don't remember. All the rest of us were catching.
And for the person asking about the taste, No different than if we had caught them with worms or stink bait. Just Sayin...RJS
Your stories are the BEST sir!!! Reminds me I owe you a book review post. I’ll get to it soon.

So, would that be a citable offense in Washington, where chumming is illegal?
