Long-time lurker on here, first-time poster. I live near the beach in Santa Barbara & mostly surf-fish when I take my teenage boys to surf. Unfortunately they haven't caught the fishing bug (yet) but I'm working on it. I'm mostly insterested in saltwater fishing, and have been fortunate to do so in many places around the world: Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Caribbean, Florida, Australia, New Zealand. Have also chased trout in Argentina, salmon in Alaska, and done some jungle fishing in Brazil & Peru.

Also interested in kayak fishing, although I am kayak-less at the moment. I'll statr another post about the one I am considering. Thanks for all the info shared on here; I hope to contribute as well.

That's some pretty good eating you're holding there. Welcome to the stage Mick. What afforded you the opportunity to do all that world traveling? Are you just filthy rich or does your occupation get you flying all over the place?

Mick,

I also have the bug and also getting ready to try the kayak thing! Please share your adventures with me as I tread the newness, I'll share as well. Looks like you don't care what kind of fish it is either as long as you're out on the water. I'm not quite so fortunate to be able to fish all around the world but I have fished some lakes and rivers here in AL.

Once I invest in the kayak, I'll start sharing my stories along the way as well! Good luck and enjoy the outdoors every opportunity you get!!

LOL not filthy rich, just deferred marriage/house/kids until I was old(er) so had no other financial responsibilities. That has changed. Used to work in the energy industry & traveled all over the world then. Did some fishing on some of those business trips, and used hefty fequent flier miles for the rest. Met the wife while in Argentina, which led to the Patagonia trip. Need to get back there.

Mick, br br I also have the bug and also getting ... (show quote)

I had a sit-on-tops for many years (Scupper Pro & Malibu Two) but sold those a while back. They were good for fishing, at least in the climate here, and were good for launching through the surf. I am looking for something lighter weight (for hoisting on top of the car) and smaller (for limited storage space). That suggests the inflatables, but not sure if they can handle surf-launches.

You were a wise young man. I was in the Navy for 21 years and got to travel to many places and I always carried a fishin pole with me in case the opportunity arose. Which it did on many occasions. Never made it south of the equator, but there aren't a lot of places north of it that I haven't spent a little time in. Never go to Mongolia either, but someday I may if my health holds up. One of the few things on my bucket list is to catch a taimen. If you don't know what that is google him - hucho taimen.

Yep, taimen in Mongolia are definitely in the bucket list, along with dorado (freshwater) in S. America.

See there, if you're not careful you'll learn something new everyday. I did not know there were fresh water dorado. That's what they call mahi mahi in some places. I've caught those. Freshly caught mahi is a tasty treat.
