I've always fished for trout by wading and using ultralight gear. I've acquired a kayak and would like to try lake fishing for trout this spring. Any tips on locations in North Georgia, techniques, or bait would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
Northwest, central or Northeast area?
This time of year, the Sandy Bottoms Canoe Launch in the Sandy Bottoms Recreation area on the Toccoa River is an excellent place for a kayak. Until May 15th it's C&R and artificial lure only, bit it's wide, usually calm if it hasn't rained hard recently, and the scenery is unmatched. Also, the only place I know of where there are a few wild trout, even though it is stocked. It's in Morganton, a bit of a car ride. May I ask, how have you set up your Kayak?
Any of the above. I'm in Atlanta, so they are all about the same distance for me.
I have a Vibe Yellowfin 100, which is a 10-foot kayak - paddle only; no rudder, pedals, or motor. I have my boat rigged with an anchor trolley to help keep it still in current or wind. I have a Lowrance FishHunter 3D that I tow just behind the stern. I've added some Yak Attack rails and have a couple of rod holders and a few other goodies installed. I've also added keel tape to protect the boat from rocks and boat ramps. She ain't fancy, but then neither am I.
visit georgiawildlife.com or Ga DNR. They have info on trout fisheries and stocking. I have heard Unicoi Lake and Lake Burton are good for kayak fishing.
