Yesterday on the stage I heard about powerbait for catfish. I've never fished for catfish and not familiar with powerbait so I looked it up. Powerbait contains PVC. Is that PVC as in plastic plumbing pipes or something else? If so, that can't be good for catch and release of the fish that nibbles the bait off the hook. Just curious, never heard of it.

I've never used power bait for catfish, I've found they prefer natural baits like livers and live or dead fish. But trout are a different story. They love the stuff, and it will out fish worms and bugs on most days. I use it a lot, and I fish to c&r. How do I do that with power bait? Barbless circle hooks. They rarely get hooked up in the belly, usually in the corner of the mouth, and even if they do since they're barbless they're pretty easily dislodged. Plus I've also found that with barbless hooks, over the past two years or so, I've caught about 100 percent more fish as compared to barbed hooks. 100 percent of zero =?

The toxicity of power bait (pvc) is dependent upon who you want to believe. Greenpeace claims it is one of the most toxic substances on Earth. According to a White Paper published by CarlyleSyntec, all the bad things Greenpeace says about are myths, and it's perfectly safe. I'm convinced it's safe, a lot of the water in my house flows thru pipes made of it, but I'll admit the jury is still out, the book is still being written. But I'm not reserving judgement. I'll continue to use power bait. Pretty sure the trout will be just fine.

After reading all of that I see no reason not to use it, even for catch and release. If I was raising Trout in an aquarium, I'd use fish food, and shiners for special occasions.LOL.

Mind you I ain't sayin it's good for em or even the least bit nutritious. But they do seem to enjoy the taste or the smell or the something about. So much so that it's been fatal on millions of occasions.

No it's not nutritious, but according to the story it's not toxic either. I notice with the nuggets, after catching a fish,I see at least part of the nugget floating on the surface. So they're not swallowing the whole thing anyway. They are biodegradable so they don't pollute the water. I think it's less harmful than millions of plastic baits I see being thrown over the side when they become damaged.

Some people swear by Power Bait but I personally have never had that much luck with it. I've caught a lot more trout on worms, minnows, and lures. I have noticed that since Power Bait has gotten popular you hardly ever see salmon eggs in stores any more.
