Waterpump and service delays

And the saga continues, 1 month ago took my boat in to fix the waterpump in my 45 hp Honda four stroke and have yearly service done. Was supposed to be 1-2 weeks.Parts I feel should of been included in the rebuild kit weren't included and due to shipping pushed repairs another week.So end of week 3 I call to check on progress and was informed that someone in the past had replaced a bunch of bolts with the wrong type and size bolts and I'm lucky the whole lower drive unit didn't fall off,so again shipping delays pushes another week.I am grateful that it was discovered and the proper equipment is being put back in but there is some irritation in the fact that I had to call in to get this information. Maybe I'm just oldschool but when I run into complications doing my work in construction that cause delays I like to inform my customers of such complications and why jobs gonna take longer then estimated. Its kinda funny in this day of improved communication that there seems to be a lack of communication. I'll just be glad when I get my boat back so I can finish the upgrades I started the beginning of winter so I can get back on the water and start catching some fish again.Safe trips and tight lines to all.

I agree, Addict. It's what the British call "good form" to keep your customers in the loop!

Are they trying to rip you off? Have you had work done with this crew before?

I live just south east of you and I always call and make an appointment in the end of January to get my boat scheduled to have it serviced at the end of February If I don't the wait list by the end of Feb. early March is always 4-6 weeks out and if any parts are needed it can easily add another 2 weeks. Parts are for all things seem to take longer and longer to get in todays world. I agree it would have been nice if they would have at least called to tell you they ran into problems. I doubt they are trying to rip you off but this time of year all boat places around here are very busy and the wait is always a lot longer than you would think. I have nothing to gain from this recommendation but 3 river marine has always treated me fairly and calls when they run into problems but they are not cheap and always seem to have a wait list. Hope we have a Salmon season this year in 8-2 and 9 any more never know until they work it all out at the end of June.

Sorry for your frustration. Don't know about your area but here we have some mobile boat mechanics who will come and do the work at your house. That's who I use when it's something I can't do. Just a suggestion.

If they were trying to rip me off the price would of gone up,when actually its lower now then I was first given an estimate. This place has been in business for a long time so I'm ok with that side of things.I just wish they would have the decency to call me,inform me that its taking longer than expected and why.As I previously stated I am grateful they found the issue and are making it right and safe, its the lack of communication that irritates me.

I definitely hope we have a season in 8-2 and 9 as well considering I live just east of Everett. I know of Three Rivers, bought a few items there including my Scotty downrigger.Boat Country was recommended by Bayside Marine in Everett due to my Honda being older, made in 1996 and good Honda mechanics can be hard to find.

I have never yet heard of anyone who got good service (time wise) from a Honda dealer, ca, O/B or M/C I have also never heard of anyone getting (timely service) from a boat repair shop. For some reason the boat industry as a whole, does not know how to use watches and calendars. Like always, there are exceptions. I left two large custom boat manufacturing companies as I knew they had no future. The top brass just could not get the concept of timely. delivery.

It should be an interesting summer. I doubt they will ever bring area 7 seasons back. It puts a lot more pressure on area 8, 9 and 10 as we can not fish here.

For me this is all rather new.I just bought my 16' Duraboat last summer and it had the 45 hp Honda on it already. At this time I'm thinking cheaper to maintain it than drop 7-8 grand on a new one.my last couple boats were smaller and I mostly ran electric trolling motors so basically no maintenance.

Most maintenance can be done yourself. Nearly every step of routine maintenance on most engines is shown on you tube. With a little time on you tube and a few cheap tools, you may be lucky and never have to leave your boat at a shop. If I do have to take the boat in, I try to do it during the off season. Quality of work can be great. It is the delivery time I am referring to. Just give yourself some time cushion if you need shop work. I have found small shops can be your best bet. Just talk to all your boating friends to get recommendations and suggestions.

I agree Wholeheartedly with you Addict! Sounds like a legit outfit trying to get your boat fixed and back to you. It also sounds like the Manager needs a couple classes on Customer Service.

I plan on politely mentioning that when I finally get to pick it up.

Some 18/20 years ago I had a Cat Dealership that used to work on our Semi Trucks after hours when needed. They would come to my Dock, pickup, drive the trucks to their shop, repair them and return them to my Dock. Half the time I’d have the same issue with the truck the next day while one of my drivers was trying to deliver products and get his job done. When I got hold of the Co. I was told they had to order parts and it would be a couple days or a week. But No communication from the shop Forman or Co. manager. That lasted for a year or so until I convinced My Management to let me change Repair Shops. It was a whole lot better with my shop of choice. They at least knew how to call and let me know it would be a couple days.

Yep,this whole deal has been a learning experience, started with my starter failing, put a new one on myself but didn't get a chance to run it before winter, also wasn't able to properly winterize it,then got involved with interior rebuild, replace floor, move things around etc,It was just over a month ago when I finished that and wanted to test it when I discovered waterpump.hopefully theres no more issues, hopefully they call in next couple days saying its good to go,and I'll have to read up on proper winterizing and or get it done with end of year service before I store boat.might even tuck motor in with an electric blanket, lol
