1962 Cuban missile cries 1 month and 4 days of worry.

Some of you may recall the worries our parents had and some may recall the situation.

How do you feel it compares to today?

nothing close yet. every night we would see pictures of missiles along the Florida coast aimed at Cuba and spy plane photos of missiles in Cuba aimed at us then there were the status of Russian war ships heading towards Cuba and our warships in a blockade that was going to stop them. No one knew who would blink first if anyone. Then there were the nuclear attack sirens that were tested on a regular basis and all us kids at school would pull the blast curtains across the windows and dive under our desks placing our hands over our heads until the all clear sounded. We were told how to prepare at home by having Iodine pills, water, food in safe place. were told how to put plastic sheets around the windows and doors and tape the edges to try to keep as much radiation out as possible. It seemed like everyone was on edge and were expecting a nuclear blast at any moment. Back then we had a president who stood up to Russia and stood his ground. It all turned out ok in the end and we didn't allow nuclear weapons in cuba, and didn't give billions of dollars to Cuba to delay becoming nuclear by 10 years. It was a much much more tense time than we are in now but I am afraid we had a better out come then than we will have now. Strong steady leadership makes a big difference

If the media would STFU and stop broadcasting and endless list of maybes. Perhaps we can get back to actual news. Are there any broadcasters that don’t give us their opinions?

sadly no. the nightly news has been replaced by the nightly political opinion time. At least Tucker and Hannity are up front that they are political commentary shows where as NBC, ABC, and CNN still claim to be news

Were broadcasters the same in 62 as they are now now?

I remember nearly the same and wish we had the ‘backbone’ to put a hasty end to the suffering going on over seas. Prayer for the world.

The main difference is in 1962 I had just been released for active duty and was in active reserves and expected to be called back. It was a tense time in 62! Just Sayin...RJS

I think not. Even the sports broadcasters are more opinion than objective.
No media can be trusted to provide unbiased reporting.

Since I was only 13 at that time
and still in grade school (8th grade),
I don't remember much about it
other than the tension at home
from the nightly news and the
air raid drills - our school was less than 100 yards from the firehouse
that blew the siren, so it was pretty loud (and attention-getting) !

Even at that age, we knew that
hiding under our desks was no protection, and that if anything actually did happen we'd just be putting our heads between our
legs to kiss our butts goodbye !

Back then, the Manchester/Boston Regional Airport was still a military base (Grenier Field) for the Air Force,
so living less than 10 miles/minutes from a potential military target didn't help much, either !
