Thinkin about that. What do you think? I'm gonna put it on my wife's St Croix Avid Pearl. She don't use it, but I sure do. Probably the nicest rod I own other than an ultralite casting rod I bought a year or so ago.
And a casting rod Egghead built for me a couple of years ago to fish the surf. But I'm open to suggestions?

Size it up appropriate out of the closet or pick a new one. I was surprised with a recent trip to BP'S. Didn't have what I remembered, what I expected. Maybe SW can show an assortment. Don't know. Sign of the times. 2500, is that rated 12#?. You'll find something nice. Good for you.

80 meters of 8# fluoro, that's the max printed on the spool. 20 pound braid will sit right on there no problem.
Can somebody tell me what's up with the side opposite the crank? What is that? What's its purpose? I've never seen that on a reel, or a reel like that.

I wonder if that is an "On the Fly" drag adjustment?

It is a thing of beauty, for sure! No idea what that is opposite the crank, though. It has dry-rotted o-rings on it, and may be missing a few(?). You may want to ask the seller?
Pair it with your Wife’s St Croix and get after them!

Pretty reel Paul, I've never seen such a shallow spool. As far as opposite the crank, not a clue. The drag is on the spool, so maybe an earlier "baitrunner " type device that disengages the handle?

Spirit..... I couldn't find a 2500S schematic that showed one of those. Looks to me like a counterbalance for the handle, but what's with all that intricate machining work ? Does it rotate, or depress ? If so, is it spring return ? All I saw was "normal" threaded caps that hold the handle to the main body of the reel. Shimano does have a chat function via your phone/tablet/PC/ other internet device for product inquiries, I used it once and it worked well for me.
I would sit down with my calipers handy and give the chat line a "call".
Please let us know what ya find out, I'm sure I'm not the only one intrigued by this. Good Luck.....

Maybe similar to this. It's called a reel stand. The one pictured has a light in it. Nice reel.
