New angler with tangled line problems

I need a little help with a line problem I've been experiencing. I'm just getting back into fishing and haven't touched a rod and line in almost 20 years.

I am currently using an ugly stick GX2 (6ft. Stick and spinner combo) with 12lbs monofilament line. After boning up on my knot tying, I wound about 75-100 yards of line onto my spool. I went out last weekend for the first time with the new gear and had problems almost immediately with tangled line. My casts were always short, and the line did not seem to be coming off the spool right.

To make matters worse, my line would start bunching up and spinning on itself. My buddy saw my casts and was perplexed. I would then spend a good bit of time untangling everything and rewinding my spool. I would get a couple of good casts before it would happen again. I know I need to work on my casting technique, but what do I do about the constant rats' nests I keep getting on my line?

It's not tying itself in knots but rather rolling up on itself.

Appreciate the help!

Welcome Jack I take all paper an glue off new spool of line an let it soak in bucket of water over night before spooling my pole. Don't over fill your reel. There's YouTube videos also. Check them out

Welcome Jack. If you fish from a boat, take the lure off your line put the boat in gear and allow the line to pull out behind the boat 3/4 down the spool. drag the line for a minute or so then reel it back in. this should take the majority of the twist and memory out of your line and it should cast better.

Hold finger on line as you reel in so it is kinda tight on spool

There is such a thing as spooling the line on backwards. If it twists up on itself that is the cause. Toss out that line and try again. It is hard to explain how on paper, but the line needs to go on the reel in the same direction it comes off the spool. If the line is old, that could be a problem also. Other solution is to use braid with a mono or flouro leader.

It sounds like you have an old line. Maybe buy a new spool of ten lb. test. I fish Stren, Trylenne always breaks with out me even giving it a reason to. Lay the spool of line on a flat surface, wind a few rounds on to the reel. Relax the line and see if it curl's up, if it does? Then turn the spool of line over and try again. Relax the line and it should be better. If you put to much line on, it will bird nest easily. If you don't put enough line on, it will not cast far enough. Hopefully this helps. Dan

If your using spinners or any kind of lure that is spinning the line, this will cause that problem use a swivel to attach your lure another thing you could try is switching to braid as it has less tendencies to coil up. Also make sure the line comes off the packaged spool the same way it's going on the reel spool πŸŽ£πŸ˜€πŸ‘

Fill the spool until it is 1/8" from the lip , spinning reels can be a pain if not filled enough .

off the line spool counter clockwise, on reel spool clockwise.

Line twist is a problem caused by spooling the line up in the wrong direction. Old line isn't going to twist just cause it's old, it may have a lot of memory but it shouldn't twist up on itself. Spool it off while your boat is running and drag it behind the boat it should remove most of the twist. I've even done this in the river while trout fishing with a rooster tail, let the current take most of your line down river and when you reel it back in the twists comes out.
