I'm new to this site. Has anyone been fishing in Puget Sound near Whidbey? Or in rivers and streams in Washington?
Thanks in advsnce
Adiliaandlauren: I feel bad that no one had responded to your post. Welcome to the Fishing Forum. We have more than 57,000 members and there are certainly some in Washington state. I expect you will get some hits tomorrow.
I live so far away I am of little help. But you can go to your state's game and fish commission, or whatever it is called, Google it for their current fishing report. Usually they are very current and have useful information, else why post it?
Next, item: Go to where you are thinking of fishing and visit the bait stand people. They are there to do business and are usually very willing to answer your questions and give tips about where to fish and for what kind of fish.
Finally, if people are fishing from the shore, visit them and strike up a conversation and most are willing to help. If not, just move on. Good luck, and post pictures of your catch. If all the fishermen are using boats, visit the boat ramp when they come in, like afternoon, and strike up conversations with those who are willing to talk. Just Sayin...RJS

Thank you for replying. I went smelt fishing at Ruby Beach on the peninsula many times when I was a child.
I bought nets etc but haven't found a place to use them.
My online searches have yielded no results.
I'll check it out.
Thanks very much

I just tied up a few sabinki rigs to hopefully catch a few herring in Cornet Bay tonight.

I just gave the number a call and the gentleman said that several people bought some jigs today and that the smelt and herring were definitely running.
Best help I can give is to download the Fish Washington application and do your homework. Not many will give up much in the way of direction. Resources are depleting and old-timers protect the knowledge they’ve built over the years. Fish Washington has an unbelievable amount of information…and it can change daily. Fishing Reg’s, map with identifiers with links to reg’s, what’s open and when, where you can launch a boat, catch records, stocking records…it’s all in the app and you’d be wise to start there and not expect too much in the way of direction by others. Yours truly included but this is a solid place to start.
Thanks so much for taking time to let me know what you've found.

Hello and welcome,Theres not a lot open in Puget Sound at this time except bottom fish, flounder, sole, sand dab, maybe winter crab ,not sure on that though. There are some lakes that are open year round you might try,Lake Stevens,Lake Washington, mostly the bigger lakes and up in the mountains, steelhead has been shut down so most of the rivers will be closed at this time.To know for sure your best bet is to pick up the Washington regulations pamphlet and download the Fish Washington App for more detailed information. Good luck.
Thank you. Winter crab closes at the end of the year and reopens early July.
