209Hammer: Simple question/simple answer: If there are any catfish in your target area, they are certainly active. Now big cats do not get big by dieting. They eat regularly and the larger ones eat small fish! So, if your state allows use of perch, or sunfish for bait, that is your best option for the 'big boys'!

As for the run-of-the-mill size catfish, all types, they will eat almost anything, and the smellier, stinkier, the grossest things you can offer, they will love. A lot of fishermen will buy chicken parts, let them age, and/or soak them with different
mixtures, even sodas, and have luck. A lot depends on how hungry they happen to be, but a lot of their searching is done by smell. Further, you should look for structures, like drifts, holes in rocks, anything that makes a suitable home. The biggest catfish will command it as theirs. If he /she is caught and removed, then another will take up residence there.

Finally, most of their feeding is done at night, all night, even the early morning hours, so you have to be a dedicated catfisherman who can devote time to the pursuit of big catfish if you want to be successful. Just Sayin...RJS
