Does rod length effect what kind of line I can use ?

This is probably a stupid a question, but I have a zebco 33 max laying around with 20lb line on it. Could I put that reel on a 5’6 pole ?

Yes, but if it’s 20# braid you might damage the eye’s on your pole if there not designed for braid. Not a problem if your an occasional fisherman.

Read the rod to see the weight of line the manufacturer suggest. It will also tell you the lure weight you should use. It also states the action of the rod and in some cases the tip speed,fast medium or slow
