I’ve been getting posts from Fishing Stage for several months, preparing myself for my first year of retirement and hopefully some gainful fishing experiences. After seeing all of the interaction on this site, I decided it’s time to join the population with hopes of enlightening, educational and friendly exchanges.
I am planning a spring trip from my home on Camano Island going east through a number of WA destinations, into northern Idaho and then a diverse number of river destinations in Montana. Looking forward to this trip and love to hear any feedback on these general destinations. Timing is the trick to some rivers i.e., the Big Hole which I’ve timed badly in 2 prior attempts. Other destinations like Rock Creek, Madison, etc seem to be less timeframe sensitive so I will do what I can to hit the Big Hole at the right time and work others around it.
On a separate note, living in a great region for fishing (despite regulations that require a law degree and daily reg vigilance) I’ve been told by a couple of locals that cut’s run the island shores though I’ve never seen a fly rod cast off the beaches here on Camano Island. Any of you guys in western WA familiar with Marine areas 8-1 and 8-2 cut fishing, I’d be pleased to get some insight. I’m going to tie up a couple of Leland’s Poppers and give this a try mid island but look forward to any feedback.
Thanks for allowing me to join this group and I look forward to a few years of sharing my wandering fly fishing experiences…when worth the telling.

Welcome CamaGuy. Nice introduction. It’s great to see another Washingtonian join the Stage. I’ve seen guys fishing for Cutthroats from the beaches on Hood Canal. I’ve never tried it but I am intrigued by the possibility. There are some great videos on YouTube that you can view.
Good luck to you.

If they’re worthy, I will. Frankly, any catch will make for a good day but this group has some pretty high benchmarks.
Thanks!

CPR is a great way of thinking. Whatever you catch will be enjoyed by most. Don’t let the size or quantity stop your post. We care and share.

Thanks. My spring trip will take me to the Salmon River through your part of the country. Should I plan a fishing day on the little Salmon? Looks intriguing and beautiful area.

Yo! Camaguy neighbor. The sea runs are still in the rivers, May to September, they will be in the salt, find the ELL grass. It’s where the salmon fry hang out, use a yellow pattern, also check regs at one time they were listed.

Camaguy, I am just a short pop away in Blaine. I try to make the same trip every other summer at least. My final destination is CJ Strike near Boise. Are you just a fly fisherman, trout and salmon,, or are you also warm water oriented. Do you plan to tow a boat? Will you camp or stay in motels? As for area 8, I am just starting to learn area 8 and 10, as area 7 has been so shut down recently that it is pretty much a sole and sand dab fishery except for a week or two.
