Trip to the Pond

Got out to my pond today. Unusual to have temperature near 60 and still 12 to 14 inches of ice. I was hopeful, since 2 friends had been out twice and pulled 250 crappies out. What they didn't keep became raccoon and coyote food. My pond needs some serious thinning, and the crappie range from 5 to 7 inches.

Took my daughter and SIL out and couldn't find them at all. There was about 2 inches of water on the ice, and each hole we drilled became a drain for all that water. In hindsight, I wonder if that might have scared the fish away. We were about done when I moved to the outlet side of the pond with no water on top and drilled a hole at the top of a windfall and within 30 seconds I had a huge bluegill that was hooked deep, or she would have been put back. Daughter came over and drilled a hole near me as I pulled out a 3/4 lb largemouth. She followed with a twin bass and a crappie. We each caught a crappie then the bite ended.

Not much meat, but still great to get out.

I remember you saying it was crowded before. Being as it’s your own pond. Can’t you net a bunch of them out? If your a farmer you even have use as fertilizer or some other entity may want them as food for pigs etc.

Just an id er.

Way to keep at it Farmer! Persistence paid off and gave you guys some fun. Just be careful on the melted ice, and thanks for the pictures!

Thanks for sharing your great day with us, Myron. I questioned your appointment to be the Secretary of Ag. until I saw your seed corn hat, the hat settled all doubts.

Thanks to all that replied.

Yes, Dakota the guys that are helping me thin out the crappie has done this to several ponds, and said probably have to remove about 2500 fish in a 1.5 acre pond to get it back in balance.
