Fish Bonzer Loc: Carlsbad Oceanside

I grew up fishing lakes and rivers of Northern California, and fishing Santa Cruz and Monterey, fast forward I’ve lived in Carlsbad for over 33 years. I love to surf fish and would like to learn how to fly fish the surf, I grew up fly fishing fresh water for bass and trout. Looking forward to learning a different skill set in the surf.

One of my best buddies lives right where you do. He is a Musician there. The Avatar looks good. Looks a little like Magnum PI as Batman.

Larry M is not real far from you down there.

Welcome to the Forum, FB. I don't know if it is a different skillset, maybe just a little heavier club. I use an 8#, just in case I would get a bull red. but a 6# or 7# would work just fine, and you may have one of those for the bass. It might be a little old though. Have at it, kid. Good luck & tight lines.

Welcome to the Stage
I haven’t tried Flyfishing the surf yet but I agree with Fly 🪰 that you might need a heavier rod & reel I have a clear water by Orvice it’s a 8 wt single hand and a Spey 8 wt by Echo Tr they would work and have sealed bearings. ( salt ) you never know what’s in the surf Could be a perch. Or
A shark 🦈

You're right about not knowing. I suspect you should anticipate loosing more if you hook something big on a fly rod. Just Sayin...RJS
