I’ve heard some say that you absolutely cannot set the hook swinging flies, that it will only pull the fly away from the fish, that you should let the fish chew on it for around 15 seconds and slowly lift just to get tension on the fish. Doesn’t make too much sense to me, I’ve never had a fish hold onto a fly for 15 seconds this just doesn’t make much sense to me.

Not an advanced fly fisherman but have been told to not “set”the hook but raise the rod tip as if you are going to make another cast. This will set the hook and if you miss you will be lining up your next cast. Additionally, if you miss with “set” you might catch the freshman or tree behind you.

I always just raise the rod, like setting a circle hook, when using any fly, nymphs, drys, streamers & strippers. And I don't mean naked ladies.
I've never had to worry about it. When I hook a trout sweeping a fly, seems like they grab and go and that takes care of that.
Sweeping the rod tipup instead of a jerk is sufficient to set the hook The long fly rod does the work.
I miss this old gag ! After all stripper's are just young girls working there way through college , RIGHT . Keep up the good work and make this old man smile ever now and then , I need it .
