Hey everybody, heading to Florida from 2/23-3/5 and am curious about charter fishing. We’ll be based in Port Orange, close to Daytona. Boyfriend’s family has a house down there and he has a motorcycle there as well, so we’ll be traveling light - no room for gear. I know absolutely nothing about charter fishing other than you’re on a boat with a guide and some other people. My goal is to catch something exciting and unusual for me. Pretty simple. Does anyone have any suggestions? Recommendations? Is it worth the time and expense? If not, I think I can hit up the neighbor or another family member for some gear and spots, in which case I don’t care what I catch - I just want a fishing fix. 🎣😎🎣 Thank you!

It all comes down to $$, but if you've got it I'd do it. The 1/2 doz. charters I've been on were definitely worth it. Just do a little research to get the charter that's a good fit for you.

Sounds like a ball. I lover charter boat fishing here on the Pacific. No worries about Ocean Conditions etc. no gear needed. Just take a lunch and hook em and eat em. I have gone on all the boats in a certain location. I know which boat / captain I will always go with. It’s not the Arrogant one for sure.

That’s helpful, Jeremy, thank you! I just wasn’t sure if it would be worth the time & effort of trying to find one, and then the cost….but it’s sounding more and more like something I ought to do.

Thanks, Whitey, especially for the good wishes re: bike safety. Gonna stay off the expressways/interstates as much as possible.

Yes and you don’t know who to trust. Some of them call it a six hour trip but what they don’t tell you it’s a one or two hour ride out and back, so you only fish an hour or two. Another thing is make sure the price includes them gutting and cleaning the fish. Tips are optional but appreciated. I wish you and your fiancé nothing but the best off shore trip you’ll ever have. Tight lines my fishing Sister.🎣🎣🎣

What kind of bike? If you don't find a charter before you get there, go to the docks when the boats come in and check out the catch and gear. The top boats will likely be booked in advanced, but always a possibility of cancelation. At least you can rule out the unsuccessful boats. You might just find a local who is great but does not advertise much or has a boat full of fish and is great but fairly new and has not yet developed replete clientele to fill his boat.

Thank you, Hack! Yeah, I hadn’t thought about the timeframe etc. Man, they ain’t cheap. Listings show the base price, but the “extras” cost more so it’ll end up at around $350 each and that’s a bit steep for me. I think I might take a pass this time around and just borrow gear for some of the local spots. There’s no shortage of those. 😁
