My son’s PB 28” caught on a 6” Savage Gear 1.5 oz eel Lure, from a structure, Jan 19. Lure in the water 2 seconds! Its not 100% they’ll be around, but when they appear its a lot of fun. Normally these guys now are all 17-21.” Released.

Congrats to your son Asente! We have a lot that winter in the Housatonic river. Mostly schoolies, but some slot fish, and even a few over slot bigguns.

Nice fish. Wish I knew where you guys were fishing from. Queens side or Manhattan?

Lived in Manhattan 15 yrs but never fished there. Water was pretty dirty back then.

The East River (not a river) can seem dirty on the edges and canals and manmade inlets, sometimes the street run off is gross in certain areas. But on the whole its attached to the Atlantic so the water is exchanged constantly. The Hudson Stripers are a no-eat due to how much time they spend up in the GE PBC polluted waters. Soon the frightening Gowanus Canal will be refreshed - you might know, they are dredging it out, and creating a new cement bottom ($$$).

Try the old Domino Sugar plant area on the east side of the East River.

Yeah, a few areas around there. That area when its hot Striper time is so congested its no fun, guys show up with 2, 4, 5 rods in - fishing with cut bunker, etc. I only use lures to not damage the fish. So I get in the say basically. Some of the guys at the crowded areas are stupefied by my catch & release - far too many under slot fish taken all year round in Brooklyn. And over too.

When I first fished there Asente, it was after I read about the area in a Fisherman Magazine back in the 70s. The article recommended fishing there with an off duty NYC cop as the crime was so very bad there then. I used to approach the area on a boat. Also very good bluefishing in the mess at the south end of Roosevelt Island as well as good striper fishing at night by the East 34th Street ferry landings.
