I am new to fishing the myakka river and the surf in the Boca/Englewood area. I have caught sail cats and sand sharks, but I'm hoping to catch even whiting instead.

Welcome to the Forum. Keith, sorry, I have no idea where they are, you have to give me a hint. Fishbites work good for whiting, and live shrimp work well for any saltwater fish.

From the surf side, I'm guessing that you are fishing a flat sandy bottom based on what you have been catching. Topsails and sand sharks are the denizens of a pretty barren sandy bottom. Scout the area you are wanting to fish at low tide and see if there is anything that would serve as some/any kind of structure that would hold other types of fish. Research "reading the water" to get an idea of what is going on under the waves. Rich Troxler on you tube is a good start.

Great advice….i watched dozens of his videos on hiw to read the surf….absolutely helped.
Bloodworms, lugworms sandworms- right? I like to surf fish South Padre Island, TX. I recently retired and am a surf fishing addict now. The bait shops here never heard about these lugworms & I don't see any of the u-shaped holes with castings in our surf. We do have sand fleas and ghost shrimp which are great baits & can be caught. Any thoughts? Any other surf fishing addicts? Ed

Hey Forrester ED. Why is your name ELKINVEST on the user list but Forester Ed here? Just curious
I am trying to change it to Forester Ed. The Elkinvest was from my investment boards.

I retired as a City Forester and am now an avid surf-fisherman living in Laguna Vista, mostly fishing on South Padre Island, TX, north out of Port Isabel
Hey Keith, with the cold weather fishing has been slow. You could try the Jetties at Venice and Nokomis or Ainger Pier on Beach Rd across from the Bait House. There is another Pier, Chadwick Park Fishing Pier, off Gulf Blvd. I haven't tried it. Heard at the Bait House it isn't fished much, so can't say if it's any good. I live in Englewood and usually wear a Raiders hat, say Hi if ya see me.
