Remember when the powers to be were going to change the system to metric?

Heck some kids i have had for helpers couldn't read a tape measure.

Hey hid cut me 14 & 3/8" 2 x 4.

Kid says: how many little lines is that after the 14?

Between a measuring tape and making change,I don’t know which is worse. But it’s not just the kids Plum. I had a guy in his 60’s working for me that cut a copper pipe too short 3 times. Ended up doing it myself

How about the kid that looks at his watch to see which way is clockwise, but the watch is digital

I like when you ask for some certain denomination back and they give me the LOOK.

How dare you break their train of thought.

Plumb I’ve taught at least 15 guys how to read a tape measure. One had been working with his dad, a great framer for 5 years and until I explained and showed him. He really had no idea how to measure other than 1/4, 1/2, 3/4. Someone’s got to teach it. Few shop classes now a days.

Auto Industry has bunch of Metric since the 80’s. I did German Envelope Machine Apprenticeship and didn’t take long to realize why engineers were saying Metric is easier because it’s 10 or 100 or 1000 on either side of decimal point. instead of having both the 64th 128th etc as well as 1000th of inch. I learned British from Dad for woodwork. SAE from Auto Shop Metric from Auto Shop. Most kids aren’t interested in any shop classes even if offered. But after learning the German stuff ( as well as Imports VW Toyota etc) on the Envelope Machines metric was way easier to learn. I figure it’s like learning ESL when not their first language. Learning British after Metric is probably way more complicated than British or Americans learning metric as secondary measures.
