Last Saturday I was down on the lower Columbia looking at different boat launches. (I have had a new boat ordered for four months and probably have another three months before it is built and I get it.) At one of the launches that I looked at, I looked up river and saw quite a few boats fishing on the Washington side of the river. My assumption right or wrong is that these fishermen were fishing for Steelhead. Does anyone know if I am correct? Can someone clue me in on what they were using for gear?
Thanks,
Jim Bradbury

I would figure YES if it is this time of year. There could be Spring Chinook too. I would figure out where all the boat trailers are parked to get some horses mouth info. Spring Chinook are hooked way up in Portland as early as January.

Can be a little more specific on where you were on the lower Columbia…🐟on
Longview was where I saw the boats. I did drive down to Cathlamet too but only saw a few boats down there.

Here is something that is relevant

The boats you saw on the Washington side could have been fishing the mouth of the Cowlits river. A very popular fishing location…🐟on

It looked like they were pretty close to Barlow Point. I was at the Willow Grove launch when I saw them.

I’ve fished the mouth of the Klickitat, right there by Lyle, and did well for bothe salmon and steelhead several times. My guess would be steelhead right now but I haven’t been down there for a while. I know the state regulations (on line ) only show when the seasons are open and not of the fish are there.

Yeah, willow grove, and Barlow point are a few miles west of the Cowlits. And my guess is that they are hunting winter Steelies…🐟on
Ricky
Loc: Columbia City, Oregon
I am guessing you might have been by Rainer, Oregon? Yes Salmon or Steel Head. I don’t know what they use . Probably quick Fish. That is a hot spot. If you are where I think you are.

Agree with comments above. They were either back trolling or anchored fishing with plugs like quick fish or diver+ eggs or shrimp.
