Hey everyone! Call me joe. I’m new to the forum. I have fished quite a few places here in my state but I concentrate mostly on the warm water species found in caballo lake located along the rio grande river. I have a kayak but prefer casting from shore at a few choice spots. Not much of a live bait guy.

welcome to the stage. NM is one of the few states I have never been to, hope to get it off my bucket list.

Welcome to the Stage Joe. I'm a mostly artificial, mostly warm water species guy myself. Never been to your state either, but love to see some pictures of your fishery. Good luck and Tight Lines.

Welcome Joe. I live in Clovis and fish mostly at lake sumner. Have fished at blue water, rudoso a few times.

Hi Frank. I’ve fished sumner from the bank on the southeast side. That’s where my profile picture is from. Bluewater once for musky with no luck. In ruidoso I fished bonito when it was still open and grindstone. Fished the stream there too.

I caught a 30inch musky2nd time I went. Had caught trout before muskies were put in. Caught trout in Bonito and grindstone. Used to catch a lot of crappie at Ute before they made it bigger. Sold my boat several years ago don’t go out as often. Have balance problems.

Caught a 26 inch musky at quemado lake. Bonito and grindstone were places I went to consistently when I was younger. Been to Ute once but didn’t fish. I live in las cruces so Ute and sumner are pretty far for me. My big interest now is winter walleye. Trying to crack the code at caballo lake near home.

We have to go at least an hour to get to Ute or sumner lakes. Son goes to Oasis fly fishing for trout in winter, catfish in summer. Have a few ponds that are stocked with both. Get fished out pretty fast.

Hi Joe, I just registered here since I’m always looking for info on New Mexico fishing. I bank fished Caballo about 8 years ago when I went down that way to dove hunt. Camped at Percha below the dam and fished after the morning hunts. Caught a nice white bass or hybrid on artificial lure right below the dam but had no luck at Caballo. Always wanted to go back. Maybe another dove/fish trip this September. I sold my boat a few years ago so I’m always looking for good places to bank fish.

Oasis? Can’t say I’ve heard of that. Haven’t fly fished in many years, very specialized but maybe I ll get back into it. We hit a load of crappie a few months back at caballo.

Hi Bob. Caballo tends to be very hit and miss. Lots of misses for me but challenging. On the lake side of the dam right on the rocks is one of my favorite places.

Thanks, Joe. What rig do you use? I usually fish artificials. I’d like to catch some of those ‘eyes in there.

Bob-From the bank a white curly tail on a quarter ounce head or smaller is a good start. Mirror the shad. Of course the fish have to be there in the first place. Finding them. Yep

Oasis is a state park between Clovis on the north and Portales on t.he south. Small pond but nice park. There is a small rv spot.
