AITA: Surf Fishing

I was out this morning fishing with my son out on the surf. Beach in general was pretty quiet, but folks were out walking. I had bait sitting out to thaw and my bait knife next to it in the sand. I was down by water, and a dog ran up and started sniffing around the bait and the owners ran up and gave me a look and told me I shouldn’t be leaving bait out or a knife out. My initial thought was that if they can’t control their dog it needs to be on a leash, but I am curious if keeping bait exposed on a beach isn’t an acceptable thing.

Dog needed to be on a leash. That’s the long and short of it. Especially if the beach is one that’s known to be used by anglers- I wouldn’t want my dog getting into someone’s rigs and potentially getting a hook in the mouth.

Animal was obviously not being controlled. Unless you had beach goers getting in the bait also then 🤔

You are fine. I won't keep bait out exposed just because a seagull will come steal it.

If a dog eats an old dead bunker, have fun with the puke on the ride back home.

Owners need to control their dogs.

NTA. You should watch your bait for wildlife that might be interested, but someone's dog is their own responsibility.

See no problem with the bait. An exposed knife on the other hand... maybe fold it or place it back in its sheath?

lmao. Are you kidding. People leave hooks and garbage all over the place, most dogs would dive into your bait. The knife i carry is an old carving knife its obnoxiously large and certainly has no sheath, i try to stick it point down into the sand when i can though. Clearly they think their dog is king and they are wrong.

Was it a dog beach that allows dogs off the leash?

I love fishing and love my dog. Leaving bait out will draw seagulls and on the jetty I have had raccoons try to steal it. I never leave a opened knife lying around. When I am on the beach my dog runs free. If in a area of fishing or sun bathers. I keep her close. Just because I love my dog doesn’t mean you have to be disrespectful of others space.

Dogs should be leashed if walking on the beach that others are using, bait should be kept in a cooler to maintain it. Many of the beaches I fish require dogs to be leashed. We always have dogs visiting at our beach house and they are always leashed when on the beach.

Gulls are flying bull sharks
Dogs are always curious
Owners never feel responsible.
Keep bait & knife in a tool box
from the ¢ 99 store. That eliminates
Thaw, gulls, dogs and that freak wave
that seems to show up at the most unforgivable time...... at least you will get a floating chance to secure it.
