Living on the Sandy River in Oregon

Moved recently to Boring, Oregon near the Sandy River and hoping to learn about and enjoy fishing for Steelhead and other native fish. My experience includes bass fishing in Indiana and fishing the Boundary Waters of Canada/Minnesota as well as some trout fishing in California.

I had a guide take me on the Sandy 10 years back or so. He had a large rubber inflatable river boat that worked very well because of the fast water and rapids. Didn’t hook up but enjoined the day. Might I suggest you take a couple of guided trips then make up your mind what to do.

Welcome to Fishing Stage. I'm not far from your exciting area. There is Spring Salmon. I used to float the Sandy. We would get up at about 2AM. Launch by 5 at Dodge park after shuttle etc to Oxbow. There is many good fishing holes. Pipeline Girl Scout Blue Hole. Those are just some. There was a group of hardboat kayakers that used to surf their boats in a wave on the sandy (right in the channel) then they got mad boats heading down stream came through where they were ( main channel). The kayak etc hard boat group put nails in rocks right where rafts had to go through in the area. They sharpened the nails after using power hammer to put in rocks in the channel. After that and hearing about rafts being popped I quit floating that river. I live very near it still.

There are some good spots on the lower end of the Sandy river if you’re lucky enough to get permission to fish. Good luck. 👍

Thanks! Names Michael, friends call me Mick. Where on the river did the wedding take place? We moved to our home on Lusted Road just a few months ago and the previous owners said that several weddings have taken place on this property.

That is a sad story Jeremy. It just takes a few misguided and mean spirited people to ruin things for others. We moved to our home here on Lusted Road back in September so I have much to learn about the river below us. Approximately where do you live? You mentioned these fishing holes. Is there a map that shows locations of these areas? I am told one is called Grandpas hole and is somewhere near the small beach on the west bank, in between Dodge Park and Oxbow. Does that sound familiar? Have you done much bank fishing? Thanks, Michael "Mick"

actually it was in the river! the whole wedding was in rafts and float tubes. I was in a wet suit paddling my daughter downstream on her inflatable swan. enough tequila keep me from hypothermia!

You’re welcome Mick. Good luck down there. I lived in Oregon for, over, 25 years and fished about ever drop of water there. My, go-to, spot was the Columbia River. I’ve fished every inch of it from the mouth to the Canadian border. Lots of fishing available in Oregon. The opportunities are not so good but there’s lots of fish there.
