My job is Senior Welding Engineer for North American operations for an OEM automotive manufacturer. Chinese owned company , although the only Chinese guys I’ve ever met were my counterparts in China.
This company in America turned into a cash dump.
Major loss. Like figures I can’t comprehend cash loss.
Our Headquarters is in Poland.
I specify , manage and oversee the acquisition of welding robots.
I’ve bought 40 robot arms in the last 3 years, along with all the tooling , programming , gauging , and commissioning of the system.
Then I move to the next one.
I work a lot. Cuts into family time . Lately fishing time is when I can squeeze it in without neglecting other stuff.

Well had a high level meeting today.
We are moving all fabrication operations to Our Mexico plant and a small portion to Europe.

Before anyone screams “ we are losing American jobs!!!”
30% of our work force is Haitian refugees they somehow sponsored because jobs that are available aren’t being pursued by true blue Americans.

Decision making time , I gotta travel like I did 2 years ago . That liked to have killed me. 9 months of the year in Mexico and the other 3 at suppliers.
Lucky for a weekend a month at home , then I had expense reports and other admin stuff .

I got EColi 3 different times. 2 of which I got after vowing , if I didn’t prepare it , I don’t eat it.
I get a hotel with a kitchen.

One option is to take em for everything they will throw at me on OT and pay off everything I owe except mortgage and truck payment in 6 months , then bank the rest. Then get laid off
And live on severance till I find other employment
Or find another job immediately.

Not just any job.

I’ve drawn 6 unemployment checks in my lifetime.

What would you do?

Sorry to hear about your predicament Ben. You do have some decisions to make, and non of Us can give you the right answer. We don’t know how everything will work out either. Although, as far as collecting an Unemployment Ck for a while till you find the Job that will get you to Your Retirement. That should Not bother you At All, you have Paid Into that System for Years! If you need it, Use it. Better You than some Illegal that never earned it At All. Sorry if I’m coming off a little harsh, but Your Not The Bad Guy Here. I hope and pray that whatever your decision is, it gets you to path for your Retirement.

Prior to my retirement my industry was in the same state of flux that you are experiencing. I travelled both domestically and Internationally for, plus, 30 years. When I saw the writing on the wall, the new 90 day wonders coming in hordes to the industry. I decided to design a program that not only got the job done correctly, but saved an amazing amount of money for the company as well. I experimented with the program until I felt the bugs were worked out then presented it, in part, to the company. The dollar and cent savings made all of those "managers"/"bosses" salivate and look like absolute heroes. I was asked to design that same system for my company. The difference now was Ihad some control. Salary, benefits and perks became much easier to negotiate.
Few will ever openly admit your value unless you actually force them too.
I remained at the same international company for an additional 5 years as a VP. When I retired I now use the same basic program to consult for other international companies as well as the original.
Age is a number. What you do with the talents and skills you have developed over the years is the name of the game. It is only over if you want it to be over.
Just my two cents. Thanks for reading.

Intelligent and well thought out.....congrats. I retired as a fabricator/machinist and let my contributions to production (several innovations) and the company determine my wages (dumb). I retired and they called me back twice at a higher wage each time ( better) and retired for the last time ten years ago. I've been fishing a lot since then.

This is great...sometimes we do not always recognize our value in the heat of battle. All of that experience is worth a fortune even if they do not want to admit outright. Congratulations all the way around and enjoy thetime on the water you have earned.
