Hello everyone, anyone winter fishing South Oyster Bay/Massapequa Cove area? I’m new to saltwater fishing, fished freshwater all my life, and I’m not sure what winter action this area has. I live on a canal, and I see birds following schools of baitfish, just not sure what’s after them this time of year.

Thers evidently a lot of stripers that forgot to run south this year. The bunker are still in your general area , so the bass are too. Check your regs.

Yeah, likely you’ve got peanut bunker around in addition to adult bunker.
As far as anything to actually catch, there’s little out there right now. We’ve got some ice on the bay east of you so that means colder waters all around, slowing down everything.
Good news is that the winter flounder will be spawning soon, spring is coming and flounder season will start, April first I believe. This time of year you should be scouting for places to fish and people to fish with. Good luck

There are stripers that winter in the back bays on the south shore so thats a possibility. Its also herring season, so they might be chasing them. Striper season is over but you can catch and release.

Good mornin', mark, welcome to the Forum. How old were you when you could spell Massapequa?

Thanks for the insight Big Dog, as soon as I get my boat (March) I will start scouting! For now, I’m stuck on the bank right now, and that’s not all that much fun.
