I went out in the basin yesterday, my boat told me to do it! Fishing was poor, but something happened, that I need help with. A fish jumped out of the water, fresh water, and hit my side of the boat, within inches of my trolling motor. Never ever have I seen this. This fish would be 30-40pds and length was 30" or more in length. Black back, silver sides, with a bit of tan around the head. It looked like a very large shiner. Someone told me I might have been a shad, so I looked it up. Maybe but this one would break the record. The fish jumped hit my boat and still managed to land 4' away, it did jump again at about 15' away and landed with a big splash. It is very quiet out there in the basin, and the loud splash would be able to be heard, if it happens close by. If I was in salt water, I would have said dolphin, and that would be the end of it, but this is fresh water, not a carp! help

That's what comes to my mind also.
Thankfully, we don't have those out here and I've never personally seen one but I've seen lots of videos and they are known for jumpin out of the water at the sound of motors. Sorry can't be of more help.

Sure looks like the picture. Big!! Maybe 100 miles north of salt water. Not sure if it is the only one. I wasn't running either motor at the time. Never saw them that big, maybe they get that size, can't even imagine hooking one!!

Well I looked up the fish. Seems they get over 100 pds. Also stated the basin here in Louisiana, is full of them. Can get up to 6ft in length. Thanks for all the input. Still it would seem that the noise this one made on the splash, would have been heard before this had happened.

Good thing it didn’t land in your lap or smack ya in the head, that might have left a mark!

A mark!? A 30 or 40 # fish hits you in the face, might just leave you in stiches, not the good kind. LOL Just how fast does a fish have to go, to jump up out of the water, at 30 #s? Yes, RB it was a good thing.
