I had someone approach me the other day .
She told her friend about some of the paintings I did and feedback was positive.
Apparently this friend wants for me to do a painting of her dog.
I’ve sold exactly one painting , one of a monster bass going after a red wing blackbird when I was a sophomore in high school.
Art teacher gave me $40 so she could gift her boyfriend.
Don’t know what kinda dog or what other details she wants.
Quoting a price is hard.
Number 1 , I don’t know how long it’s gonna take. If I’m not feeling it , I don’t paint.
Have before and it’s not my best work and it shows
Number 2. I ain’t a professional. Say I charge X and they don’t love it , then I just ripped someone off
Once this develops , I’ll probably have em pay what they think it’s worth to them.
I’ll obviously cover my material. What I get is what they are thinking of paying for my effort .
Rest is my time.
I’m a little nervous. Never done this before.
So if a picture is worth a thousand words. A painting could be worth thousands of dollars…. Quarters… dimes. I agree with your thinking. Maybe you get a following and then sky is limit. I completely know what you mean about feeling it or not.

This seems like a good position for you to be in. You're obviously very good. You really don't have anything to lose in this deal. If you get enough to cover your costs, and aren't painting when you could be making money elsewhere, this could have a huge upside. If it goes well, you may start having people lined up for your paintings. You may not make a lot on the first one, but you might just start making more for each one after.
Good luck, I think it's awesome you have that kind of talent.

Ben, if your hobby becomes a must do and concerned over the $$$. Are you still going to enjoy what was a hobby?
Follow your heart, enjoy what you do and inspiration will flow.
My daughter is an exceptional artist. She is 10 but draws and paints better than almost any adult I’ve ever seen. (I’m sure I’m bias but everyone is always amazed with her work.) My point is that she will not draw, paint, etc. if she is not in the correct mood. “If I don’t want to do it, it won’t look good” is what she tells us. You can’t rush an artist. Take your time, enjoy your work and the recipient of your painting will be over joyed with the finished product. We’ve all seen your skills!
Good luck Ben, hopefully this isn’t the dog 😂

Holy s#!+ kill it with a rock!!!
I'm not sure but no more than $___. Depends how long it takes me. ? Maybe?
My students parents moved to Brooklyn and had all her paintings on display around the house for all to see. They GAVE me her french horn [I can probably get $5,000.00 for it but saving it for a worthy student that doesn't have much money] and I picked a painting. She said how much did I want to pay for it. Gave her $50 then after looking at it realized how cheap I had been. Thanks for reminding me. I"m going to send more money even thought they don't need it...He's a hedge fund Wall Street guy. I LOVE the painting. Will try to post a pic.

Your daughter gets it.
Artistic just isn’t something you wake up in the morning and do.
Unless you are exceptional , which I’m not.
Encourage and support that daughter. Sounds like she has something special

I’d start off with thinking you’re good. If you think you’re “not profession” or “not very good” you will be both of those. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and every piece of art has its place. I, personally, like the compassion and detail you put into your work and I’ll bet I’m not the only one that thinks that way. If you have a, specific, picture of a particular dog to look at things will come much closer to reality. I have a friend that paid hue dollars for a painting of her three horses. I didn’t like it at all but she loved it. The horses didn’t look much like horses but the colors were right and everyone knew what the picture portrayed.

I was kidding, of course. I know you have an eye for detail and hopefully you are provided a decent photo from which to work. If you don’t treat it like a job I am sure your talent will flow. Good luck!
