I have had good results at MicroCenter in Houston. But since I no longer live there and some what stranded. I know Austin is Dell country, but I don't want to pay through the nose for an unknown quality and brand--me.

Always in the past I've bought refurbished units at a much lower price, around $ 200 or so, but am wanting to move up to a solid state drive, which I am told is much faster and more reliable.

Any thoughts, advice? Just Sayin...RJS

Mine occasionally does that if I inadvertently hit one of the buttons on either side of the letters. The keyboard is not "raised" like on a desktop. Frustrating!

Are you typing in “word”? You can set it to auto save if that’s what you’re having trouble with. If you are and have auto save set up, then your keyboard may be on the blink. You can still use an external keyboard and connect via USB port or wirelessly through Bluetooth. If all else fails and you purchase a new laptop, ask for one with speech recognition. That way you don’t have to type.

Robert,

You are now located in what is called the "Little Silicon Valley".
You can get new, like new, or refurbed to meet your needs for $200.
PM me if you are interested in replacing your current PC/laptop.
I will get you a list of places you can shop on line, that are close-by.

Thanks Black Dog. I still use Micro Center in Houston but thanks for your offer to help. I see you are also in Round Rock. We are in Parkwood Meadows which is on Chisholm Trail Road. We are just a little west of I-35 and off of 620. Been here since August. I would invite you to visit but recently we've had a run of Covid here so it is a little spooky and we are more or less about 1/2 in quarantine. Just Sayin...RJS

I've had a solid state laptop for a while now and I would say if you get one you won't be disappointed

Well, I have been trying hard to purchase one. Four different times I have callee Micro Center, Housrton and cannot seem to get anything done. Last time I was on hold for over an hour and could not get what i was intending to purchase. The model was there when I started out, but I guess got sold before I could complete my purchase.

When I lived in Houston, I would just walk in, ask a few questions and walk out with a purchase and had done so for years. I am now lost without that resource. I usually buy 'refurbished' units and they have served me well for several years before having to replace them, as this current one has done. Just Sayin...RJS

RJ, Micro Center is much better(read Cheaper) in my eyes than Tiger Direct. Other choice for almost no problems was New Egg, but still higher than Micro Center. Get a USB keyboard and plug it in, then turn on the laptop so it Does a search for it right off. I worked on laptops fo Dell with my next to last company and they are really cheaply made. Well so are the USB ones now. LOL Micro Center sells them for about $5 BTW. Get 2 and when the first one wears out, use the next one. Same thing with the mouse pad. A wireless mouse with the blue tooth or USB connection does real good. No wires to break after 3 years(Normal Death of a mouse).

I just wish I had a Fry's near me as they were always cheaper than any one else when having a sale. BTW I will not even walk into a Best Buy store. Ant thing they have you can find cheaper or better for less money.

Now you made me sad. Well, try MicroCenter.com , they have good prices. New, Open Box, and Refurbished systems as well as parts. That way you can check your budget to see how much(speed) you can afford.

Computers are like cars inasmuch as a doubling the speed = increasing the money by some exponential.
speed X 2 = $^3.

Have no fear, Robert. Your new Dell Latitude 5480 laptop, refurbished from Microcenter, is pretty much configured and ready, with your favorite Peacock Bass desktop background. And I am working on a tutorial for you on its features.
