Ah ! Sunrise on Mt. Washington !
One observer at the Mt. Washington Observatory tried to eat his spaghetti breakfast outdoors but was foiled in his attempt, as the spaghetti froze before he could even get it to his mouth !

He was out in -30° temps and
found an area where he could
be out of the 65 (+)-mph winds
where he attempted to take
a bite but found it already frozen
to his fork !

The temperature on Tuesday was expected to tie or break the record
of a daily low for Jan. 11 for the top
of the mountain, where the HIGHS
were expected to reach between
-30° and -15°, with wind chills down
to a VERY FRIGID -80° F !

(Unless you're dressed for an Antarctic expedition, those
temps WILL frost your buns off !)

😳I’ll bet you’re glad you’re in Arizona. It’s cold here with some wind but I’m talking 30 above with 30 mph wind. Nothing like -80. That’ll do more than frost your buns off.

You're right ! I am exceedingly
happy to be here in Arizona, where
(in the Valley, at least) it seldom reaches lows in the 40° range !
I have endured (briefly) temps as
low as a wind chill of -40°, but that was in my youth and was never repeated !

Have also fallen through the ice in January (10° temps) and was so hypothermic that it took several
hours dressed in long-johns, flannel PJs, a fleece bathrobe and woolen blanket and sipping hot chocolate before feeling completely thawed
out ! I will gladly endure four months of 'hellacious' heat (average 110°
+/- 5°, and have seen it hit 121°) in exchange for these mild winters !

Been to the top on several
occasions - stayed (overnight) one week-end in January (1962 ?) when
I was in the Scouts, trying to earn a meteorology merit badge, but the wind chill that week-end only fell
to -20° F ! I still froze my butt off anytime I went outside, and I still
get the chills just thinking about
how cold it was ! - (BRRRR !)

It's a dry cold, feeis 20-30*warmer if you're dressed for it. We used to do a lot of jackrabbit and coyote hunting in the winter there back when we were youg and didn't know better.

Those temps are common where I live. We have had multiple days this year with temps of -30 - -40.

At 6,288 ft., Mt. Washington is
the highest point in the north-
eastern U.S., and even in summer storms have killed hikers ! With
wind chills having been recorded
down to -96° F, it is said to be the second-coldest place on the planet, with Ninavut, Canada listed as THE coldest place, but without the high winds !

It has been declared "The World's
Worst Weather" and it is said that
the brutal weather ''can cause a jet engine to ice up in 20 seconds'' !
First two photos show 'rime ice', which happens so quickly that one can almost see it happening with
the naked eye !

The bottom photo (from 1933)
shows the only original building
left of the original observatory -
it was CHAINED DOWN many
years ago to keep it from getting blown off the summit !

... tree or fireplug ? Was afraid
to pee outside when I was there,
as I suspected that I could have
BEEN/BECOME (?) that dog !
