I don’t hunt so this doesn’t matter.
We got a black lab because I like the breed when the kids were little. Parents were registered and both were good bird dogs. Our lab wouldn’t go into the water to save his life but he was great with the kids.
He would craw up to sparrows and catch them with his paws. Craziest thing I have ever seen.

Thinking of my little Oreck yesterday, I remember something, he could not swim.
He went every where with us. Did a lot of sailing and fishing the last 2yrs of Steve's life, he was always on the boat with us, even out to sea. I kept his leash on incase he went in to pull him out with. One day, at the dock, my daughter threw him in. To our surprise he sank like a rock in 4ft of water, just stood there on the bottom. Scared us thinking if he had gone in in deep water there was no way we could have saved him. Got him a PFD and tested it.
We assume dogs can swim. Are you sure yours can.

I’ve seen a couple of dogs that didn’t know how to swim. An Irish setter I knew was one. He would jump in the water like the other dogs I was running, but that dog either sank or flailed about trying to swim. Funny thing is, he kept jumping in the water !

I've had swimmers n sinkers. I knew a guy that was like a channel marker. 6'2" 325+ jump in the pool n just Bob around. I weighed 170 then n I couldn't float even trying to lay spread eagle on the surface.

First hearing of this for me as well. Every dog we've had LOVED to swim. Glad you discovered this in shallow water!

My boat dog Buddy thought he could walk on the floating vegetation that was up next to the boat, he has not tried that again!

I never heard of a dog that could not swim but I know as a kid I could sit flat on the bottom of a pool and have to swim to get back to the top I now have enough fat to float

Have had 3 different labs and they all loved the water and swam like fish. Now have a bulldog mix and she won’t go near the water and we suspect she would sink like a rock if she ever went in but we have never forced the issue, even in our pool.

I had to retrieve my German shorthaired pointer from deep water and a fast running creek on January 22nd. He was hanging in some bushes and every time he tried to turn loose to swim he'd sink.

You should always have a lifejacket on the the dog ( if they can swim or not) especially in the ocean. They can jump or fall off, and if your not paying attention things can go bad fast.
Have fun and stay safe

Up until now, I'd always thought that they were all experts in the 'dog paddle'!

Never thought about that. Of course our Catahoula would swim across the lake and find my boat wherever I was. No wonder mom was calling me from the campsite. I just thought she needed help with the camp stove. Gotta love them dogs. Missing ours after 13 years with us.
