I was fishing out on the south jetty in Venice again yesterday. Fishing was good but the only fish being caught were Jacks, Cats, and a couple of Pompano that I saw someone else catch. Only one of the Pompano was a keeper. Anyway, I’m getting off of the subject. As I was reeling in a Catfish the tip of my rod snapped about an inch above the third eye. I was so pissed when it happened. It wasn’t a cheap rod after at. It’s a StCroix Mojo Inshore that I bought in October 2020. I thought I was going to be out $170 until I contacted StCroix this morning. I knew it was still under warranty, but I thought I was going to have to jump through a bunch of hoops, and still not have it covered. As it turned out I contacted customer support and once I varied the model and serial number, I was told that all I had to do was fill out a form and return it along with a few pictures and a new rod would be shipped out once the information and photos were reviewed and varied. I knew from my research that StCroix had a great warranty, but since this is the first rod that I’ve ever broken, I didn’t realize just how great it really is. I can’t wait for the new rod to arrive.

Many times the rods break where a Knick was. You can get a sheathe to cover the rod when not in use. I have broken some decent rods on big Salmon but probably had a scratch or Knick in the surface where they broke. Carbon fiber rods sound like a firecracker or gunshot when they break 🧨

For some reason, St. Croix rods like to break more so than others. I have no idea why, but they do.

I suppose thats the difference between a $50 rod and the higher end ones….i had a $50 rod shipped to me and when i took it out of the cardboard container, i bent the tip to see how the action was and it snapped with just a couple pounds of pressure…i mailed the company immediately and was told to go pound sand….went on tackle warehouse and gave them a sh*t review and never heard back.

You should never, never, never, do that to a rod, you will break them every time. Cheap ones or pricey ones. I had a guy do that to a rod that I built for him, while he was still in the shop. I could have cuffed him up alongside the head, but I built him a new rod instead. Pi$$ off the whole time I was building it. They will break on the top of where your thumb is when your fingers are bending the tip down. DO NOT DO IT!

I edited that post after I posted it. What happens is the thumb applies pressure upwards and the fingers apply pressure downwards. It's like breaking a small stick. Rods are not made to bend like that.

I only bent the tip downwards under a little pressure…..one hand down by the reel seat the other at the top..not a two handed try to snap it type thing. I see what your saying and understand that if i put one hand in the middle of the rod and tried to bend the tip down it would snap as the pressure wasnt transferred to the entire rod…

Danger I remember in 8th grade we had to do like a 5 minute speech. The teacher let us do it on whatever we wanted so one of my buddies brought 2 fishing Poles in an was talking about the different type of poles. he grabbed 1 down by the real seat and the other at the tip an was talkin about how it was unbreakable and when he pulled the tip down it broke about a foot below the tip needless to say His dad was not impressed. But got a lot of sh__ from his classmates. Can't remember now what kind of pole it was but knowing his dad it wasn't a cheap pole.

I agree. I don't know if it's the Mojo series only. I have had two break in the same spot. There warranty is outstanding, but that does not help when you are out fishing. I no longer have them in my arsenal for casting. The two broken ones are working great for bottom fishing sole and sand dabs. I just added a new tip and relocated the last ferrell.

Just a sinker or a lure bumping against the rod while stowed can cause a weak spot

From my observations, the week spot in most rigs is me.
