I forgot to mention the husky jerk. Another good one.

For colors , if you just getting into jerkbIting.
A pearl white and pro blue are good just about all the time.

When you get into really clear water , the more natural colors start to perform best
Tennessee shad is solid under these conditions

Match the predominant natural forage in the waters you fish.

If you aren’t sure, everything that swims eats shad and shiner minnows.

Remember, the bass has time to get a good close look before committing.
Realistic finish is key in gin clear water.

Stained water calls for some of the loud colors. Chartreuse or clown get it done. As does pink for some reason.

In muddy water, jerkbaits don’t seem to produce. At least for me.
In dirty water , I’ll find something else to try. Something with a lot of flash and vibration.

thanks for the jerkbait technique. I've wanted to give it a shot, but always go to my topwaters, spinners, and worms. I'll have to give it a shot.

I catch a lot of walleyes on Rapala Husky Jerks close to the shoreline at night,
even in two feet of water on very deep lakes. They come into the shallows to
feed. I'm usually the only one on the lake, with best fishing usually from dusk
to midnight and again an hour before dawn. A long sweep of the rod with a
two -- five second pause seems to work best.

I've had good luck with the XRap. Caught a 26 1/2" Walleye on it!

This tip won't be new to experienced fishermen, but for
others it might be useful: avoid using snaps, swivels to
attach your jerk baits, as this affects their action. A Rapala
knot or other loop knot works best.

What is a jerk bait?

Floating Rapala minnow lures are great but are not what I consider a jerkbait because they float

To me , a jerkbait is a minnow type diving lure that when reeled to depth, suspends when at rest.
The good ones stay right where they are , or rise very very slowly .

The action is , once you get it down , jerk it. Hence the name.

The jerk action is generally with rot tip straight out pointing at the lure then a sharp jerk straight down , as if you were smacking the water surface . Though try not to actually smack the water. If you do occasionally, no big deal.
The cadence of the jerk vary, and I’d recommend trying a variety till the fish tell you what they like that day
Sometimes 2 short jerks and a pause. Sometimes up to 4 jerks and a pause. Agressive or more passive. Really depends.
It’s important to have a little slack in the line for the jerk or slash as I like to call it to really work right.
Never reel and jerk at the same time.
It’s equally important to pick up the slack during the pause.

The pause is probably the biggest variable. Jerk jerk pause. Jerk jerk pause. All the way back to the boat.

In really cold water or after a cold front , a long pause is the ticket. Some guys will say “ pause for a minute”. I don’t have the patience . For me a 15 second pause is long.
Warmer water, the pause can be 5 seconds.

It’s easy to get brain dead using this technique. Autopilot .
Pay attention. Visualize this
Your a bass , just hangin out, it’s cold and you don’t feel like runnin around chasing something to eat , but it’s lunch time.
A minnow shows up at the limit of your visual range. It’s acting crazy , dart left , dart right , then stop. Hang out a while , then do it again.
Hey let’s saunter over there , see what’s this thing doing ?
Well you are close , eyeballing this guy. It stops. Glides and quivers a little.
Too much! I’m eating this.

With jerkbaits , you rarely feel the bite. When you go to jerk again, you are loaded up.

There are many different jerk baits on the market today.
I’ve got a bunch of smith wick suspending rogues I’ve custom painted.
Lucky craft pointers are solid
Rapala makes good ones

My favorite is the megabass vision 110 but they are rediculois expensive.
I’ve managed to sneak 32 of these past the wife at $25 a pop
And I’ve got 50 more that I bought as blanks and custom painted.
What I like about these is they make 3 models. The vision 110 thru the 110 +2.
The regular runs 5-6 ft
The plus 1 runs 1 meter deeper and the + 2 runs a meter deeper than that. Or about 12 ft.

If you are a seasoned pro or just got a first rod for Christmas and can’t wait till it gets warm enough to fish .
Get you a couple jerkbaits and give em a try.
First fish, you are hooked for life.
I love fishing jerkbaits. Especially in early spri... (show quote)

Thanks Ben
I started last year using a jerk bait and really love the technique and I'm still learning.
Thank you for this post.
Do you use a medium heavy or medium light?
Have a great year fishing.
Can't wait to get on the water Duck season I'll be out their in 3 weeks.

My preference is a medium or medium light extra fast taper. And I run the reel drag lighter than typical.
I find this is more forgiving when it comes to keeping fish pinned.

The hooks on good quality jerkbaits tend to be very light wire.
If you ever notice hooks straightening, you are applying too much force when fighting the fish.
I’ve caught quite a few 5+ pounders and learned the hard way, you can’t manhandle jerkbait fish.

Thanks Ben. An excellent tutorial on brands, colors and technique. My only comment is that as an old man (78) with arthritis, fishing jerk baits wear me out. An excellent technique in cold water. Take care and heal up.

Don’t use my jerkbait rod as much as maybe I should. Biggest bass I ever caught using one was 3# , and that was pretty recent. I don’t like doing the work to make the baits do what they are designed to do. Lol. But when I fish with a jerkbait I use a lucky craft pointer. In my opinion, it suspends good with a slight head down attitude.....My 2cents.

Berkeley Hit Sicks were just featured on In Fisherman TV for walleyes in shallow, natural lakes in ND on hot Summer days. This is something I would never have considered. They seem to be a decently priced alternative.
