Yesterday two of my sons and I went ice fishing. We had a great day with some fish caught, wind and snow blowing as we set up the tent, the freeway was closed in both directions when we were heading home, and whiteout conditions on the freeway when it opened.
My youngest son doesn’t really care much for fishing but he likes to eat and hangout with his family. He snacks all day and caught a couple of fish. The other son prefers ice fishing over most other fishing because there are less distractions. He caught a bunch of fish. I’m not sure how it works, but almost any time we set up the tent and fish in it, one person catches more fish than the others.
There was snow on the ice that you would go through with a bit of slush on top of the ice. We found a decent spot where we set up that we weren’t sitting in slush all day. It was only about 18 feet deep where we were, but we caught most of the fish at 12 feet.
I-15, the only freeway that runs north and south through the state was closed for several hours between us and home. Both of my son’s wives had texted telling them about it. We got some dinner, and checked to see if it had opened back up. We decided we were going for it and halfway home our phones went off with a “winter squall” warning. The weather looked fine, the roads were better than what we had been over. We were laughing about the squall until we dropped off my younger son. Then it actually got bad. Heavy snow, heavy winds, very slow going, but we made it home. All in all, a great day.

Nice catching Stuco and sons! It looks like you guys have a great set-up for being out in the cold anyway. Nice job and thanks for the pictures!
Oh yeah, congratulations on making it home safely.
Nice Stuco, sounds like quite the adventure. Your ice fishing rig looks pretty darn comfortable.
Amazing! You three defied snow, sleet, a blizzard to sit in sub zero weather. Now, I consider you guys real fishermen, defying wind, subzero weather and blizzard conditions to huddle around an ice hole and fish. Just Sayin...RJS

Once again, better to have one and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Nice setup Stuco. Comfy chairs. I have a couple like that. If you're going to get snowed in you might as well be fishing ☺️☺️
I don't care for ice fishing but you made it an adventure. Sounds like an interesting day.
Sounds like you had a memorable day alright. Nice that you spent the day with your sons, that’s the best thing a dad can hopefore.

Thanks bk. I’ve spent way too much on ice fishing the last couple of years. Considering I only got out twice last year, it’s kind of ridiculous. That said, when I have a day like that with family or friends, it’s worth every penny. I’m taking a group of teenaged boys and some leaders out end of January. I may or may not have bought a six man tent to go with the four man I already had. Im an addict…

Thanks Grizzly. I can’t see a reason in the world to have an uncomfortable chair if your going to sit out on the ice and freeze to death.

Isn’t that the truth? I cherish the days I can get my family to go out fishing with me. I have five sons and a daughter. Half my daughters in law, and my son in law, grew up fishing with their dads. It’s a blast when we get a bunch of them out. Only one daughter in law has come ice fishing, yet.
