Well, I was never much good at fishing in the surf. Follow Gordon's suggestion. If you have fresh shrimp that would be a good bait to offer. Just Sayin...RJS

Welcome to the Forum, Tx., I never did much surf fishing down there, but I didn't much of it either. I have a couple of buddies down there that have boats and that is nice. we usually fish the Laguna Madre or the ICW. Otherwise, I would fish the jetty in the state park down by the KOA campground. Fishing is somewhat limited if you don't have a boat. You can try the pier in Port Isabel, I have and usually caught a few, but nothing to brag about. I have fished under the bridge going from SPI to Port Isabel and gotten a few, but it is easy and enjoyable to fish there and it doesn't cost you anything. Most other places, except the beach surf fishing, it does cost.

Welcome aboard, TXC. Surf or beach fishing requires a little reeducation but it is easily learned. Rely on the many great videos on YouTube as to how to "read" the beach. They will tell you how the beach is laid out and where the sand bars are located and where there are apt to be gaps in them. You will need to gear up for some long casts and most folks go to a rod 9' long or better, about a 3000 or 4000 size spinning reel, 20 lb braid for a main line and the same for a leader in f/c. Don't spend a ton of money right off the bat. You can get a reasonable rod and reel set up and get change from a $100 bill if you are careful. If you fish for the smaller species; whiting, ladyfish, etc., you'll catch them and you will also be in the same water as their predators, Reds, Speckled Trout, Jacks and sharks. You never know what you might pick up. Check out the videos by Bama Beach Bum and Hey Skipper on YouTube. Central Texas? Houston, Corpus? They have some good wading there too.
Outstanding! Thank you for all the info, I’ll be looking for the you tube videos as well, going to spend a few days at pins soon, hopefully put the info to good use, tight lines!!👍
