My grandson/best fishing buddy Liam turns 12 next week and I want to set him up with some new gear. Picked up a Kastking Zephyr 3000 reel - any suggestions for a $50-$75 rod to pair with it? Thank you! ๐๐ฃ
My opinion for a younger fisher person would be an Ugly Stick. They are close to indestructible. What you fish for & line recommendation for the reel is a big consideration, too.

Betts, depending on how mature and responsible the 12 year old is should determine what to get. I am sure some folks will be by to better answer that question.
I know my 11 year old wont be ready for a quality rod for a few more years.

Thanks, John. He's happy to catch pretty much anything, but usually it's bass and bluegill. Ugly Stick is a good idea, thank you!

Thanks, Bob. Yeah, I don't think he's ready for a high dollar setup either. I'm sure he'll be happy with whatever he gets.

The ugly sticks have it. And I agree. That's what I use for cat fishing to black sea bass off shore and red fish, trout ,black drum and so on
Betts,I bought both my sons a good rod & reel at age 7-8. With the rigs came a stern sentence from Dad โIf I ever find it laying on the ground or an unsafe place theyโd never see it again. Becauseโฆthey were told Iโd take it back to where I bought it & tell the clerk to give to someone who will take care of it.โ Both still have those rigs 33 & 26 years later. My granddaughter age 8 will get the same stern words.

The verdict is in, but don't limit your choice to the GX2 ($40). They also have the Elite series ($50) and the Carbon series ($80).
I am too late to vote, but Ugly Stick would get my vote, in fact, I use them myself. I do not think either you or the recipient will be disappointed. Few fishermen can appreciate top of the line gear anyway! Just Sayin...RJS
