What is the purpose of the snap swivels?

And how are they better as opposed to regular barrel swivel?

It just occured to me that the majority of the time i am also tying a knot to the snap swivels when i could be doing the same with a barrel swivel.

I suppose they could be used for artificial rules snap rings, wouldnt i be able to just tie snap swivels to the lures?

I hate snap swivels . Don’t even own one.
Snaps have their purpose , swivels have their own purpose but snap swivels , in my opinion are useless.
Don’t waste your time with them.

I use them on the end of the line if bottom fishing with hook about 18 inches up from the bottom. That way I can change weight if I want heavy or lighter weight.

As Ronnie said snap swivels are good for quick change of lures. I'm not sure what a barrel swivel is.

Good for LOSING fish and lures. Made by tackle companies maybe it’s the whole point.

I use very large snap swivels to change weights quickly when bottom fishing in tide created current. I like to fish as light of weight as I can and still maintain positive bottom contact. That involves changing weights on a regular basis. The current is different at different stages of the tide and at different depths. I may change as much as a pound oz. by oz. in the same spot going from slack to max flow. Halibut fishing, I may go from 12 oz. to 2 pounds. I don't fish over 2 pounds and rarely over 1 pound unless fishing a full salmon head or live 1 pound fish or bigger. It is no fun for me.

Never hah much use for them. I use swivels on a Carolina rig or a Yamoto reg with a open hook on a grub or creature bait. As for salt water on grouper and snapper rigs. I use a glass bead to prevent the weight of the weight from hammering the knot above the swivel apart. On spinner baits I use sampo bearing swivels. If I want to change blades I utilize the split rings and a pair of split ring pliers.

I use snap swivels and always have to make it easy to change lures etc. I use the smallest I can and don’t like the ones that snap or lock like a safety pin. I like the ones that actually hook over the standing part of the swivel. Barrel swivels are handy in rigs to eliminate line twisting. They are just a bearing of some sort between two eyes. The Bering can actually be like other bearings with ball bearings or more like the links of a neck chain we used for our dog tags or keys. But stronger.

I tie a king sling knot on top water like Zara Spooks . It gives them more action than a snap. I tie a king sling on crank baits to give them more wobble. A snap reduces the wobble. I get more action from the loop knot and it's easy to tie. More action equals more fish. Personally I've more confidence in my knots than casting on the same knot on a snap over and over again. Personally I like the motion I get out of the loop knot. Less terminal tackle equals more motion and less weight on the nose of the bait. To each his own. Confidence is the best lure in your tackle box.

snapp are no good for bass fishing, or other. they ruin the action of lures. i do use barrel swivels . cuts down on line twist, but the smallest one you can.
