First of all, welcome to the stage Ed. What a coincidence. I was in Tinino just last Wednesday. Took my wife by a little quilt shop there. Next to the Eagle lodge. We were on our way down to Ridgefield. I don’t salmon fish anymore so can’t help you there…🐟on
Welcome Edward,
Hoping someone comes along who can help you out. Enjoy your time on the Stage.

Welcome Edward, I think you’ll find this a fun and informative site.
EdwardL,
Welcome to the stage! Spey casting is not super common, and may be shrouded a little in some mystique...like fly casting in general...because there is a bit more going on. Like anything that is new to us, there is a learning curve. The more you practice on real flowing water...the better! Of course you can also surf cast into still waters too, but as for me...I enjoy a river setting more. I would focus on the basic casting stroke (single spey cast - double handed), and perhaps a few others (double spey, switch cast and snake roll for later on). Do not be discouraged if you don't master the entire gamut in rapid fashion. Keep it simple and that will flood you with confidence!
If you also do traditional fly casting, the techniques you learn will also come in very handy with that method too!
I took a few lessons, and then found the attached DVD from Rio to be very helpful. I watched disk #1 just a few nights ago as a refresher to prepare for going after steelhead in a few days when we get a warm spell here locally in Michigan. I am far from proficient, but enjoy it as just another way of having fun with the passion I have for approaching fly fishing in a different way.
Utube is also a wealth of "free" instructional's as well!
Good luck with your experience!
