How to store fishing rods?

I am VERY new to fishing. I havent even gone yet. Ill be going this weekend.
Before then though, I wanted to set my rod up and practice casting.
Im just curious what to do when im done? Can the rod be stored with the line still threaded and the hook attatched and all?

Absolutely. On baitcasters they usually have something on the reel, if not the rod usually will, to attack the hook through. The setups I frequently use I keep my lure on the hook too.
Edit: you do not have to have a baitcaster to keep your hook and line on. That was just an example.

That's how I store my rods and reels. I leave the hook (and, if applicable, the sinker) or lure on, but I remove the cork if I'm using one.

If fishing saltwater get in the habit of rinsing it with freshwater and towel drying before storing (saltwater can damage your rod and reel)

The important thing to do when storing rods with a lure still on is to back the drag down to almost nothing. This way if the reel handle gets hit and cranks in line the drag will slip and protect the rod tip.
If you use fluoro it can become deformed where it rids on the rod tip, but again keeping the drag slacked will help with this as well.

Most poles I've used have a little wire notch that you can put your hook or swivel on for storage. If not then use one of the loops the line runs through.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned that you should avoid is keeping your hook through a line guide of your rod. This can potentially damage guides, which can then damage your fishing line.

I always back my drags all the way off too. That takes all the pressure off you drag washers and they will last longer and stay smooth

a trick i learned is to use a pipe cleaner to keep your line , hook, lure etc. in place when traveling or storing your outfit,,wrap it around the rod,line and sinker tighten and twist tight ,, works great !

Use electrical zip ties around butt of rod just forward of reel. Hook holds there out of harms way. For sure drag almost off..

Remove all tackle when traveling and/or storing - not worth the risk of injury or snag complications. Besides, when fishing you want the reliability of fresh leaders & knots.

The pipe cleaner thing works, however you can also use garden tie wire. It's wire w/ rubber coating, usually in green, won't disintegrate, won't scratch rod, grips wherever you put it. I get mine at the Dollar Tree store ! Also a GREAT rod "bundler"..short piece for a collapsed rod...18-24"+ piece can bundle 2-4 rods and allow for a carry handle if you like. Niteize makes a heavier version in various lengths and diameters for extension cord and air hose management, but they're kinda spendy (Walmart and sporting goods stores, REI,Dick's etc) Both are a staple on my boats for this purpose, as well as for other "fix-it" needs (secure that extra lifejacket or such)

Yes defenitly back drag off. Ive never done it but i like pipe cleaner trick always something to learn in this sport I love it.

I loosen my drag, separate rod into 2 pieces, secure my reel in it's case, I then use one way self griping Velcro (comes in a roll for appx 7 bucks), I cut a piece appx 4-5" and wrap it around the 2 pieces of my rod to secure them together! I then put my rod into a hollow pool noodle which protects my rods and lures, hooks etc from snagging on anything. Different color noodles lets me quickly distinguish which rod is stored in which noodle.
