Reccomended rod and reel for a beginner?

I'm really not sure what to look at when buying a rod and reel. I mainly fish in brackish water in the river in Florida, occasionally I go to a nearby pier. Ideally I'd like to spend less than $200

Depends on you really. Then what you are after. For bigger fish a M/H rod, 7 foot or more for caasting off the pier and bank. For Surf then a bigger rod. Reel?
What do you like or have used? Spinning Reel, Open face or Closed face?
IF just starting out I would get a Zebco 202 and have new line put on it. What comes with it is not real good line. IMO Go to Walmart or a Tackle Shop and start picking up rods until you find one that "Just Feels Right" to you.

Audigger is right about getting one that feels good in your hand. If you're going to just cast n wait it's not that important. If you're going to make many casts during an outting then it's very important. I wouldn't get the 202. I had a few yrs ago n lvd em. Got one for grandson when he started. The 202 was junk. I still have a half dz 33's.

The 33s are by far the better reels

Better built but much lighter line and Drag from when I had one, The 202 is not as well built I agree, but can handle much heavier line. Or so I have been told. Now a Bait runner reel, most are just 16 LB drag and he said Briny/Salt water. That's why I said the 202. For Salt water I like at least 20 LB Drag for the reel. Just me.

Purchase a couple of rods and reels. Try casting them on grass in your backyard or park. Return what you donโ€™t want.

The Ugly Stik GX2 is the best rod you can find under $50. I would recommend medium heavy. Staying under $50 for the rod gives you some room on the reel. I'd buy a Daiwa BG 3500 or 3000. They are well sealed and will last years. https://ameliafishbites.com/the-best-spinning-reels-under-200/

You should have enough left over to buy some Power Pro braided line 15 or 20 pounds.
