Pennsylvania and outboard motors

Just a warning to all in PA. There is no such thing as a title for your outboard. So be sure to save your original receipt and have the serial number written on that receipt at the time of sale. This is the only way to prove ownership. You can have it on your boat title but that will create headaches beyond belief when you upgrade to a new motor!

That makes no sense. Is there a registration on the motor?

How's that work for used boats? When you buy a new boat do they give you a separate receipt for motor? Never bought a new one 🤔

When I bought my new boat here in PA, the motors were listed on the title.. you'll see that especially if there is a loan on the boat. The Lenders have proof of what they are entitled to if you default. Keeps people from taking the motors off if the Lender comes after the boat.

That’s true Doug but that is the first way it happens. Remember though now according to your lender you can’t sell that motor as its now on the loan and technically is owned by the lender. You have to sell as a package. I realize I may be sounding paranoid but I have never heard of not being able to get title before.

It should be like anything you buy. Once it's paid off they relinquish any n all claims to any part of it. I took big ob off my glastron n put a small one on. Boat was originally titled in Pa then went to Md. I brought it to Pa n got original numbers. Had no problem doing either. All transactions cash.

I agree with Griz.. pay it off and its yours to do with as you want. In PA, you deal with Fish and Boat Commission. I've had several Titles corrected with them. Fairly easy to deal with. I think the last one I had done was about $20 to have corrected.. absolutely nothing was right on the Title except the HIN. Had to submit a few pics, but that wasn't any big deal.

I have a notary that is a licenced agent with Pa. F&B.C. He's taken care of 2 of my boats with no problem. I did have titles n bill of sale

If I remember correctly, the form needed to change info is a PFBC-T1

True Grizz once it’s paid off. That could be quite a while to put up with a poor choice of motor you thought was a good one to start. My sole point is if the boat gets a title and the trailer gets a title why not the outboard? The same people that would steal your prop if they knew about this would gladly steal any outboard they could handle!

I regret bringing this subject up.

I have a bit of an advantage on these issues of boats and trailers.. My wife owns a Notary and Clerical business.. Full PennDot agent, Fish&Boat agent, DCNR, along with Tax Preparation, Payroll, and Accounting..

I can usually just give her things and tell her "Fix This" !! LOL
