DC reels?

Hello All

Any experience with the new Shimano DC reels?

They claim longer casting distance and reduced backlashes especially with light lures - and I could use both if they really do. My baitcasting is fine with lures that have weight but can struggle with light lures ☹️

We don’t have much time before ice closes down our boat fishing season but I would consider trying one between now and spring if they really help. Yes, I know that I should just practice more 🤭

Any experience with them, good or bad?

Thx,

Red A: I am in the same boat, not the ice problem , but buying such an expensive reel as the Shimano Computer model.

If you do purchase one, please send me a PM as to how you find it, and does it help case light lures effectively. Just Sayin...RJS

Hi folks,
I have three grades of Shimano DC reels: SLX, Scorpion (JDM), and Metanium. I have one conventional reel from the $150 range. I bought the SLX the day after I produced a birds nest so big the blue herons were fighting with the ospreys over who would get it if I threw it all out of my Kayak. This occurred during my fourth attempt (day) using a baitcasting reel. The SLX made me an instant Champ. Maybe it is in my head, in the form of confidence, but as price goes up they feel better, more accurate, and throw modestly farther. I have produced a few small nests, but only from gross stupidity on my part. That said, I am an 'all in' novice, and have no doubt that most folks can cast just fine with practice with any reel. I am just impatient, a technofreak, old, living on borrowed time, and am blessed enough to be able to indulge myself to a limited extent. I love my DCs. Your milage may vary.
PS: Thanks very much to you stalwart contributors sharing your wisdom and knowledge.

Dang!!! Your actual question! Yes I can throw light lures, into the wind, you name it. You must read, understand, and correctly apply the instructions re the controls. Good luck!

Hello All br br Any experience with the new Shima... (show quote)

My kids have DC’s and are both able to throw small cranks and swim baits that I have to defer to my spinning rods. My older baitcasting reels just don’t cut it.

Thanks lv
That’s good to hear!
Light cranks, jerks and even jigs have started pushing me back to my spinning reels and I’d really like to be able to use my baitcaster for most of my fishing apps 👍

I have a Curado DC and put it to the test last year bomb casting crankbaits intentionally into a strong wind.
It performed well. Did manage a couple very minor backlashes.
You can’t blast a cast into a garage door like they would like you to believe.
Backlash reduction is how I’d characterize it

As for light weight baits, I’m not so sure this would be the right reel for finesse presentations.
For that I use an Aldebaran primarily and occasionally my Metanium.
The Alde is made for light weight work and it does a fantastic job

Owner of two Curado DCs absolutely love them. Backlash reduction sure, almost none. But I bought an Aldebaran also intending to set up a finesse rod. Haven’t been able to get to the gloomis rod I want so it’s matted to a St. Croix med fast. Can’t put it down. DCs hang around a lot and the Aldebaran gets all the work. The St. Croix is rated down to 1/4 ounce. The Aldebaran will do that and less on this setup. I know you were asking about DC and they do work, but it isn’t just the DC that will get light bait out you need the right rod. If you have the budget the Aldebaran is awesome.

Hey jwid, what rod you end up pairing with the Alde?

Just temporarily until I can get my hands on a Gloomis NRX. I have it on a St. Croix medium fast 6’8”. It is a nice setup, but I am ready to go all out on the Gloomis. What would you recommend. Finesse setup is my target.

Thanks, Ben - that’s good to hear!

I wasn’t thinking finesse plastics but I’d love to have cleaner casts with my light cranks & jerks. I hate having to pull some line out after a long cast ☹️

I haven’t tried an Alde. I do have a Metanium that I bought used a couple years ago but it’s never been my favorite - the release button has always been a little tempermental and moreso now. More recently I picked up a Revo SX and like that reel. But I’ve never really noted a backlash control difference between my different curados and Revos - is a difference expected?

At this point, I’ll think that I’ll pick up a DC in the off season when I find a good deal. And I should probably have a few of my reels cleaned & serviced 😅

Thanks again,
