So Jordan, Zoey the dog, and I go on the lake last Tuesday. We head to our favorite bridge to fish under. Jordan catches 27 crappie in 40 minutes, with 9 keepers. I caught one keeper, two throwbacks, and a 3lb carp - yuck .Jordan is like a pro. But in fairness, he’s got the Hummingbird up front with him. So I fish where I can. Just saying. He’s gotta go back to land for a class at 3:30 at juco .So we motor near shoreline for one more cast to get is 10 limit. First cast near the brush he nails number 10. Meanwhile my only cast catches a snag. We troll over 15 feet. My snag wasn’t on a branch. It was the middle key of a submerged brass tuba! The bell was barely sticking above the surface. I lean over to inspect. I try to lift it and lose my balance. Oh no! Just then Zoey grabs my belt at the back and pulls me back. What a great dog! So Jordan holds my belt this time. I dump some water out. Then I get it into the boat. As I I unhook my jig from the middle key, a 20” walleye shoots three feet straight up out of the bell. Fortunately, I’ve got great reflexes and grab it with both hands! Immediately Jordan gets his phone out for a picture, after I secure jig in its mouth for my “catch”! Great picture. We get boat trailered. I go over to men’s room for paper towels to clean tuba somewhat. Jordan heads to class. I find the engraved signature: “Bob Uecker St Louis Cardinals Catcher 1965”. This is the famous tuba Uke “borrowed “ to catch fungos in the outfield pregame. The Dixie Land Band made the mistake of taking a break. They laid there brass instruments on left field foul line. Bad mistake on their part. Uke sauntered over and grabbed the tuba to catch the fungos.
Then he snuck away. This has to be that tuba. It’s got at least 20 dents in it unmistakably from baseballs. Another great fishing day on Lake Decatur.
PS: Augie Bush Sr did take the $600 value out of Uke’s next three checks, asBob Uecker’s salary was $22,000🐳😳drewbarrick
