This is a very difficult question to answer because of the amount of equipment available to fishermen today. Perhaps you should do some research on line and maybe even visit a Cabelas type store. You will get help there and get to see the different type reels, rods and tackle in person. Once you zero in on the general type of equipment you prefer then re ask this and I’m sure you will get better advice from members. Good luck in your search. It should be fun and very eye opening for you.

There is no right answer for this one. The biggest question is, what is your budget? It all depends on what you plan to fish for. Are you going after panfish, bass, catfish, or you going to be saltwater fishing. You can get a decent rod and reel combination for panfish under $100, where as decent bass or catfish rods and reels usually are between $120 to $200, but can get up close to $1000. I am not all that familiar salt water, but I have seen just reels advertised that run $2000 to $3000. My best suggestion is to get the best quality you can afford. You can google fishing equipment and find a lot of examples that explain different equipment and suggest the best bang for your buck. Good luck and enjoy the sport.

For someone just starting out; budget conscious or not; I would recommend the Ugly Stick combos in a 2 piece set. 6 1/2 ft medium action with 6 to 8 lb monofilament. This is a very good all around setup for panfish; trout; bass; walleye; catfish ect. You can also use it as a saltwater setup. If you talk to your local sporting goods shops they can help you get your "terminal tackle " and lures. They can help to keep it simple. It won't be cheap but with that rod/reel combo you can get yourself a tackle bag or box and fill it for under $100.00

Try looking for that rod/reel combo on Amazon. Ugly Stick GX2. Walmart and some of the others sell it also. Just compare the prices.

Price ranges in tackle are similar to comparing Fords and Chevies costs to Range Rovers and Mercedes.
They all get you there however!
