Wow.very broad question .I won’t go into live bait fishing, because I don’t do that. Also , fishing from a boat or shore line is different. But since your fishing situation is unknown to me, I would suggest using a 6” plastic worm w/ a quarter ounce bullet shaped weight, and a 3 /0 thin wire worm hook , Texas rigged. pros......Plastic worms are fairly cheap, so less painful if you lose one. They can be fished in just about any type situation. Around rock, in grass , deep cover, or right on the shoreline. There are a kazillion colors for plastic worms , but in my opinion, any color will work as long as it’s green pumpkin......cons.....being soft plastic, they will tear up after awhile, so you gotta rig a new one usually after catching a few good fish....My 2cents...

My preferred method for catching Bass is to use rubber worms or other soft plastics. You will find that rubber worms are very versatile. I prefer the scented or salted variety. My go to color is black or black and silver
( baby bass) as mentioned previously by Chuck, green is a good choice, I prefer a light green and silver color. I fish mainly from the shore so I will start out fishing parallel to the shoreline with a 1.0 hook and no weight if the water is calm. If the water is fairly deep near the shore 5 or more feet deep I will use a 16th Oz jig head, this will allow you to fish the worm a few feet beneath the surface slowly without it falling to the bottom to fast. Don't be to concerned with the small hook size unless you start losing big fish. I have caught many good sized bass ( 2 or 3 pounders ,) on the small (long shanked) jig. When I need a little more weight I will use split shots maybe a number 5 will give you good casting distance on 15lb braided line. Personally I prefer split shots over bullet weights for safety reasons .If you get snagged on something or in between rocks usually the split shot will come off where as the bullet weight can become a very harmful projectile. You should also use scent , even on scented worms I use combo scent , crawfish/shad it works well. I catch more bass and larger bass on soft plastics than any other lures when fishing from shore.
