Hi guys and gals, today there was a question/post about circle hooks. I knew nothing about circle hooks. I guess the point of a circle hook is to not have to set the hook and cause minimal damage to the fish? I can see that on smaller fish. I like to go for Northern Pike with a large minnow on a bobber. I'm used to waiting and setting the hook, not always successfully. Can I use a circle hook for this type of setup?

You sure can. DO NOT set the hook. When the fish makes the run just start reeling. If you try to set the hook you will pull it out of his mouth. It takes a bit of getting used to, after all these years fishing circle hooks I still try ot set the hook on occasion. Tight lines Bobber

What bobber22 said. I've been fishing circle hooks as small as size 10 and as large as 8/0. Yes, they work great on bluegills for the grandkids to help prevent gut hooks. I've caught fish as large as 20+ pound redfish and sharks. I would think that northern pike would work great because like sharks it keeps the line out of the teeth.

Bobber is correct
you can use circle hooks with any type of bait fishing. The hook was designed to always hook the fish in the mouth so you cause minimal damage. great for all C & R fishing . fishing small streams and rivers I will pinch the barb. just reel when the fish hits and yes it takes a bit to get used too.

Many use them for catfishing. Alot of places if you fish with bait for striper circle hooks are mandatory. In line circle hooks.

All I use off-shore. We have on choice fishing for Snapper and Grouper. It took me awhile to like them ,but it all worked out.

It depends how big your bait is Ed. Probably 2/0-4/0 anyway.

All I use for fluke. I just lift the rod when I feel the hit. The only time I’ve ever gut hooked one was when I was dead sticking. They can swallow the hook that way.

I used 16/0 for charter halibut. That is standard for the commercial halibut fishermen. They are the standard for long lining. The fish set the hook them self by just swimming away. It is hard for the hook to come out once the tip penetrants given the shape of the hook.

Yes Sir. Circle hooks are great to use fishing for any fish. You just have to let the fish set the hook. I caught these a while back on circle hooks. Gives you an idea what size to use. Good luck mistred.
