Info on using a fishfinder

I've been researching fish finders and reading / watching videos on how they work. I get the basics of how to read them and what is being displayed. I'm having trouble translating that to how it is practically used fishing. When I watch videos I see people talking about the fish being under their boat (in range of the sonar) but then they cast way out to the side of the boat.

If there is an article or video showing someone using a fish finder to catch a fish I'd love to learn more about it.

A fish finder shows structure and activity. You’re gonna need very high tech, very expensive, electronics to put your gear in a specific fish’s mouth. The more you spend the more detailed you’re gonna get. I’ve got $5,000.00 worth of electronics on my boat and that’s not including a $4,000.00 spot lok set up. I know where the bottom is and if there’s fish near by or something moving under my boat or within range of my electronics. That’s, generally not the only fish in the body of water I’m fishing. When they cast out to the side of their boat their gear will settle from gravity and end up under their boat as well. Experience from lots of hours of fishing teaches me WAY more than my electronics ever have.

When I am crappie fishing and mark fish under the boat I will cast my jig away and let it swing to the boat in the strike zone. Better presentation and you cover more water. Also the knew 360 models pin point fish and structure all around your boat.

I only use fish finder to pinpoint structure. I want to be sure there are no rocks to block the shock wave from my DuPont lures.
