Most of the fishing that I've done has been done in this small pond with very muddy water and a mud/grassy bottom. I was wondering what lures and baits are most effective in this kind of pond, and at this time of year (located in the northeast US). I tried using a roostertail and a crankbait but the treble hooks had a tendency to hook this slimy grass that seems to be all over the place. The perimeter of the lake is covered in 5-10 feet of thick reeds that makes fishing in them impossible, but I always see a lot of fish splashing in there. Any help would be appreciated.

Mountain: Sounds like you were attempting to catch largemouth bass, or other fish of that type. I suspect you would have a better chance of fishing for catfish! Minnows, perch, or even worms would work, and a lot of died in the wool catfishermen use chicken livers, gizzards, and other parts, as well as stink bait. Just Sayin...RJS

Perhaps a small jig head tipped with a worm (real or plastic) would work.
