Two weeks from now we'll be eating leftovers. Does anyone have a family tradition of eating anything other than turkey as the main course? And let's talk sides. You know, that disgusting combination of canned green beans and mushroom soup. Stuff like that. While we're at it, am I the only one on here who spatchcocks his turkey and cooks it on the grill?
Let's talk turkey!

We switch it up quite often, turkey one year and smoked brisket the next. Sides include scalloped potatoes, corn, green beans and a strawberry salad which sounds a bit weird but is extremely tasty.

Yams with a pecan crusted glaze, dirty rice, pork sausage cornbread casserole, sometimes cracklin cornbread in place of the casserole, Aztec salad and garlic French bread. Sweet potato pecan pie with praline ice cream. And I now spatchcock my smoked turkeys thanks to you. The leftover turkey goes to the sausage and turkey gumbo. 👍👍👍

At times I've had boiled shrimp with rice. Buttered peas and carrots. Red Lobsters Butter & Cheese Rolls. For desert, Strawberry & Rubar
(Not sure on spelling ) pie

My Mom prepared a ham as well as a bird. Large family including my Dad, maternal Grandma, and nine kids. I always ate both. Baked ham , roast turkey, stuffing, rutabaga ( my favorite) carrots, mashed potatoes, gravy of course, stewed tomatoes, corn, apple and cherry and mince pie, tomato soup cake ( better than it sounds ) . My mouths waters right now just thinking of it. We were poor but never hungry, even with so many mouths to feed, did y'all ever hear of the rhythm method of birth control ? The only method approved by the Roman Catholic church then. Now, I have no idea. It requires a measure of restraint that I guess my parents lacked. I would never substitute another childhood for this crowded but mostly loving environment. Glad my folks were good breeders!

As you know I smoke everything but for Thanksgiving I want HAM and from year to year the ham may be grilled or smoked and even roasted in the oven. I even honey and brown sugar glaze the hams (sometimes) when I grill or smoke them. Mashed taters, creamed spinach, brussel sprouts, asparagus and of course stuffing with ham gravy. And if I can hold it cherry pie and what I call dirty ice cream (chocolate chip small chips). I smoke turkey drumsticks thru the year.

My son will smoke 3 turkeys in different sales that he inject in the bird one is BBQ and the other two what he makes up!
Also we will have venison backstraps. And duck poppers wrapped in bacon and yellow pepper.

And BBQ them.
May all of you have a great eating Hoilday ☺ with your family 👪

I've never considered spatchcocking a turkey. If I did that, how would I stuff it? My Wife's stuffing is to die for!

Thanksgiving here is the standard stuff. Agree I don't want the green been casserole anymore. We mix it up for Christmas dinner. I'll start that topic after Thanksgiving.

Thank you Andy. Those poppers sound really good. How do you make em? Recipe?

I see one mention of rutabaga. That's a staple on our thanksgiving table as well. My wife likes em mashed with a lot of butter and a little bit of honey or brown sugar.
